Jakarta (ANTARA) \u2014 Industry Minister Muhammad Sarmuji is targeting\nthe development of dedicated clusters for data centres in industrial\nestates to meet their electricity and water needs, while preventing\ncompetition for resources with residential areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cData centres should really be placed in a somewhat specialised\nlocation. Ideally, they should be in a cluster, because they require\nsubstantial supporting infrastructure, especially electricity and\nwater,\u201d Sarmuji said after a meeting with the Indonesian Industrial\nEstates Association (HKI) in Jakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He stressed the importance of anticipating potential conflicts over\nwater use between data centres and residential areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must not let data centres compete for water with housing or\nresidential areas, as that could lead to conflict. They therefore need a\ndedicated location, perhaps closer to the coast so the water can come\nfrom seawater desalination and so on. These issues need to be\nconsidered,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said the government and stakeholders would identify the various\nrequirements and obstacles that need to be addressed to increase the use\nof industrial estates.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Industry is also encouraging the development of\nthemed industrial estates outside Java, based on the strengths of each\nregion. These estates are expected to be integrated from upstream to\ndownstream, including their supporting ecosystems.<\/p>\n
