Industries facing punishment for waste pollution<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two-thirds of 187 manufacturing companies
\nassessed in a recent government survey are inflicting serious
\npollution on the environment, an official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Surna T. Djajadiningrat, an assistant to the State Minister of
\nEnvironment said that 61 percent of the private companies
\nsurveyed throughout Indonesia had been given a 'red'-category
\nwarning for industrial pollution.<\/p>\n
Surna said the companies had failed to maximize their efforts
\nto improve their waste treatment systems.<\/p>\n
He said three percent of the company's surveyed, who are the
\nworst polluters, had been given a 'black'-category warning. Their
\noperations will be closed down if the company's refuse to improve
\ntheir waste treatment procedures, he said.<\/p>\n
He said the Ministry of Industry and the Capital Market
\nSupervisory Board would take stern measures against polluting
\ncompanies which failed to improve their waste treatment processes
\nby the end of the year.<\/p>\n
Surna made the remarks during a break in a seminar on
\nenvironmental developments which was sponsored by the Office of
\nthe State Minister of Environment in cooperation with Jakarta's
\nTrisakti University.<\/p>\n
The two institutions have long cooperated in relational to
\nenvironmental problems. Trisakti has not only included subjects
\non the environment in its curricula but has also opened a
\ndepartment of environmental technology.<\/p>\n
Surna told the seminar that the most valuable resource in
\nefforts to protect the environment was the educational
\ninstitution. He urged all educational institutions to conduct
\nresearch on pollution.<\/p>\n
The global transformation being wrought by economic
\nliberalization was very advantageous on one hand, he said, but
\ncaused serious problems on the other.<\/p>\n
Surna said development caused environmental problems,
\nincluding soil erosion, pollution, the green house effect and the
\ndepletion of the earth's ozone layer.<\/p>\n
Problem<\/p>\n
Maftuchah Yusuf, a professor of environment at Trisakti
\nUniversity, told the press that the most difficult problem for
\nthe university in teaching its students about the environment was
\ntraining future teachers of the subject.<\/p>\n
\"Many teachers are not yet ready to teach the new science
\naccording to the new syllabus and curriculum,\" Mrs. Yusuf said.<\/p>\n
To meet its demand for teaching staff for its courses on the
\nenvironment the university had entered into cooperation with the
\nUnited States Information Service (USIS), which helps send
\ncandidates for lectureships to the United States for further
\neducation and brings American staff to lecture at Trisakti.<\/p>\n
Jajah Koswara, director of research and social services of the
\nMinistry of Education and Culture, said that Indonesia had
\nalready had 67 environment study centers, attached to various
\nuniversities.<\/p>\n
She said that in 1992 the directorate general of higher
\nlearning had sponsored a new project to develop 18 environment
\nstudy centers throughout the country.<\/p>\n
The purpose of the project was to increase the managerial
\nabilities of the centers, to increase the skill and knowledge of
\nthe staff and to develop the science, Mrs. Koswara said.<\/p>\n
She said the project also aimed to support the centers in
\nresearch activities and human resource training.<\/p>\n
According to Mrs. Koswara, most environment study centers are
\nactive in conducting environmental impact analyses. (05)<\/p>",
