        "content": "<p>Indosat to set up new ground network<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The state-owned international telecommunications<br>\nprovider PT Indosat will set up a new ground satellite network in<br>\nGresik, East Java to support the telecommunications services of<br>\nthe international organization Inmarsat.<\/p>\n<p>Indosat president Tjahjono Soerjodibroto said on Saturday the<br>\nplanned network will be used to facilitate the satellite-based<br>\nPersonal Communications Services to be run by an Inmarsat<br>\naffiliate, I-CO Global Communications Ltd., in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>I-CO was established by the International Telecommunications<br>\nSatellite Organization, known as Inmarsat, which provides mobile<br>\ncommunications for ships at sea, aircraft and land users. It owns<br>\nand operates a number of telecommunications satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Indosat has also set up a company, PT Indokomsat Lintas Dunia,<br>\nto manage the business of I-CO in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\"The network could be an earth station or gateway. We will<br>\ndecide after a meeting between Indosat and Inmarsat in Jakarta<br>\nlater next week,\" Tjahjono said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Indosat has spent US$12.87 million to acquire a 1.41 percent<br>\nstake in I-CO, which will launch a global mobile satellite system<br>\nin 2000. The system, set to use 10 satellites, will permit mobile<br>\nvoice and data communications through hand-held telephones<br>\nanywhere in the world, on land, sea or air.<\/p>\n<p>When in service, the I-CO operations in Indonesia will compete<br>\nwith PT Asia Cellular Satellite System (ACeS), a consortium of<br>\nthree companies from Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand,<br>\nwhich will provide a similar service in late 1998 or early 1999.<br>\nACeS will use two satellites, each weighing 2.6 tons, in serving<br>\nthe Asia region.<\/p>\n<p>Indosat, which is listed on the Jakarta and New York stock<br>\nexchanges, also has a Jakarta-Surabaya submarine cable network<br>\nwith a gateway in Banyuurip, Gresik to facilitate<br>\ntelecommunications services in the country's eastern provinces.<br>\nThe company also operates International Telecommunications<br>\nSatellite Organization (Intelsat) earth stations supported by 564<br>\nsatellite telephone circuits via a new earth station at its<br>\nBanyuurip gateway.
