Indosat, Telkom to help develop tallest tower<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State-owned telecommunications operators PT
\nTelkom and PT Indosat will participate in the development of
\nMenara Jakarta, which is set to become the tallest tower in
\nIndonesia. The multi-million-dollar tower will be erected in
\nKemayoran, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave told
\nCommission V on transportation, tourism and telecommunications
\nof the House of Representatives in a hearing here yesterday that
\nthe planned 500-meter tower will become a tourist attraction.<\/p>\n
He told reporters after the hearing that the tower will be
\ndeveloped as a multimedia center. \"That's why we are involving
\nTelkom and Indosat in the development of the building.\"<\/p>\n
Indosat, which runs international telecommunications services,
\nhas announced its plan to enter the multimedia business. The
\ncompany has just acquired a stake in PT Yasawirya Tama Cipta, a
\nJakarta-based firm which produces video recordings for television
\nbroadcasters.<\/p>\n
In its financial report, Indosat said it is currently
\nexploring the possibility of providing multimedia services and
\nhas budgeted $13.5 million for the development of a pilot network
\nfor 1996.<\/p>\n
Telkom has also signed a preliminary agreement with PT
\nTelekomindo Primabhakti and PT Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia
\n(RCTI) to develop multimedia services.<\/p>\n
Telekomindo is a private cellular telecommunications operator.
\nTelekomindo, partly owned by Telkom, is controlled by the
\nRajawali Group, which has ties with both businessman Peter
\nSondakh and the Bimantara Group, which owns RCTI.<\/p>\n
Joop, Indosat's president Tjahjono Soerjodibroto, and Telkom's
\ntop executives, all refused to say how much money the two
\ncompanies will invest in the US$400-million project.<\/p>\n
The tower project is being managed by PT Indocitra Graha
\nBawana, a consortium involving businessmen Sudwikatmono, Prayogo
\nPangestu and Henry Pribadi.<\/p>\n
The building, part of the Kemayoran development plan, is set
\nto be about four times taller than the 132-meter national
\nmonument, Monas. The highest part of the building will be used as
\na telecommunications center and house broadcasting and television
\nfacilities, in addition to restaurants, hotels and offices.<\/p>\n
When announced last year, the project sparked controversy but
\nthe government eventually gave the go-ahead.<\/p>\n
The planned 500-meter tower is expected to be the third
\nhighest in the world after the CN Tower (555 meters) in Toronto,
\nCanada, and the Oskantino (530 meters) in Moscow.<\/p>\n
Architects grouped in the East China Architecture Design
\nInstitute reportedly won the competition among a limited number
\nof world tower designers. Completion is scheduled for the latter
\npart of the ongoing Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (Repelita
\nV), which will end in March 1999.<\/p>\n
Joop reiterated yesterday that the tower was not setting out
\nto rival Monas. (icn)<\/p>",
