Indosat in Cambodia<\/p>\n
PHNOM PENH (Reuter): The Cambodian government and the
\nIndonesian company Indosat have signed a contract for a US$15
\nmillion joint venture to rehabilitate Cambodia's national
\ntelecommunications network.<\/p>\n
The satellite-based network was set up by the United Nations
\nduring preparations for the May 1993 elections and handed over to
\nCambodian authorities last February.<\/p>\n
The joint-venture was agreed last week between Indosat
\npresident Tjahjono Soerjobibroto and Cambodian Secretary of State
\nfor Post and Telecommunications So Khun.<\/p>\n
\"First, we will upgrade, install and expand the system to
\nall 21 provinces, which will take three years,\" Indosat
\nrepresentative in Cambodia Iman Budi said in a telephone
\ninterview.<\/p>\n
\"The joint venture will involve the setting up of a new
\ncompany, Camintel, in which Indosat will have a 49 percent
\nstake,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Once the telecommunication system is operational nationwide,
\nIndosat will help with maintenance, sales and collection of fees,
\nBudi said.<\/p>\n
The contract runs initially for 11 years, with the
\npossibility of a five-year extension.<\/p>",
