Indonesia's first virtual university starts enrolling students<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's first multimedia and Internet-based
\nvirtual university, which provides lectures and tutorials through
\nthe Internet, has started enrolling students.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Bangkit University Teledukasi (IBUTeledukasi)
\noffers both undergraduate and graduate programs on information
\ntechnology, information systems, information technology
\nmanagement and business administration.<\/p>\n
"We are making a breakthrough by promoting low-cost education
\nand preparing the nation to face global challenges," Adi Sasono,
\ncofounder and chairman of the board of directors of the
\nuniversity, told reporters at the formal launching of the
\nuniversity last Friday.<\/p>\n
The university is run by Perhimpunan Bangkit Indonesia, a non-
\ngovernmental organization under the Association of Indonesian
\nMuslim Intellectuals (ICMI), in cooperation with Malaysia's
\nUniversity of Tun Abdul Razak (Unitar), the first virtual college
\nin Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Adi, a former cooperatives minister, said most of the lectures
\nwould be given through cyberspace, while students could consult
\ntheir tutors using the Internet's chatting facility.<\/p>\n
Le Ikhsan K Amin, customer service manager of IBUTeledukasi
\ntold The Jakarta Post last Friday that the cost of studying at
\nthe university was relatively cheap compared to prominent private
\nuniversities. "Students, for example, are not required to pay a
\nbuilding maintenance fee," he said.<\/p>\n
He said the four-year undergraduate program at IBUTeledukasi
\nwould cost students around Rp 16 million, while at other private
\nuniversities it cost between Rp 20 million and Rp 40 million.<\/p>\n
According to Le Ikhsan, at least 30 people have enrolled at
\nIbuteledukasi through its office in Menteng, Central Jakarta,
\nwhile another 1,500 people have enrolled through Unisula in
\nSemarang.<\/p>\n
Interested parties can also enroll online through the
\nuniversity's website www.ibuteledukasi.com, starting mid August.
