Indonesia's contribution<\/p>\n
The chances of finding a settlement to the Moro problem are
\nimproving, especially since the government in Manila and the Moro
\nNational Liberation Front agreed to establish an autonomous
\nregion for the Moros in the southern Philippines.<\/p>\n
As a neighbor and a fellow ASEAN member we are relieved to see
\nthe positive developments in a conflict that has plagued the
\nPhilippines for 24 years. Moreover, we are proud that Indonesia's
\nefforts to help settle the Moro problem peacefully have begun to
\nshow results.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's initiative in sponsoring the initial talks between
\nManila and the MNLF and our readiness to be host to a series of
\nmeetings between the two parties demonstrate the concern that we
\nfeel as a member of the world community of nations.<\/p>\n
Philippine President Fidel Ramos acknowledged the important
\nrole that Indonesia has played in finding a peaceful settlement
\nby conveying his gratitude to President Soeharto and to the
\nentire Indonesian nation.<\/p>\n
The Moro question has shown us that however complicated a
\nsituation may be, a peaceful approach is the most effective.<\/p>\n
