This biological\nwealth positions Indonesia as a megadiverse country with a crucial role\nin maintaining ecological balance and providing valuable natural\nresources for human life. One of the greatest potentials of this\nrichness is the existence of medicinal plants, which have long been\nutilised by communities in traditional medicine systems and as raw\nmaterials for the modern health industry.<\/p>\n<p>The use of medicinal plants in Indonesia has a long history closely\ntied to local wisdom. Various ethnic groups possess traditional\nknowledge about using plants to treat illnesses, maintain fitness, and\nboost the immune system. Plants such as ginger (Zingiber officinale),\nturmeric (Curcuma longa), Javanese ginger (Curcuma xanthorrhiza),\naromatic ginger (Kaempferia galanga), green chiretta (Andrographis\npaniculata), betel leaf (Piper betle), and gotu kola (Centella asiatica)\nare examples of flora used for generations in Indonesian traditional\nmedicine. This knowledge not only reflects a harmonious relationship\nbetween humans and nature but also serves as a crucial foundation for\ndeveloping science based on local resources.<\/p>\n<p>The potential of Indonesian medicinal plants is enormous in terms of\nthe number of species available. It is estimated that Indonesia has\naround 9,600 plant species with medicinal potential. However, only a\nsmall fraction have been scientifically studied for their phytochemical\ncontent, pharmacological effectiveness, and safety aspects. This\nindicates that opportunities for exploration and innovation remain wide\nopen. Various studies have proven that Indonesian plants contain\nsecondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins,\nterpenoids, and steroids, which possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,\nantimicrobial, antidiabetic, and even anticancer activities. These\ncompounds form the basis for developing herbal medicines and modern\npharmaceuticals derived from natural ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>The development of medicinal plants not only benefits the health\nsector but also contributes to national economic growth. The industry\nfor jamu, standardised herbal medicines, and phytopharmaceuticals is\nshowing positive development, driven by increasing public awareness of\nnatural products. The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has\nrecorded that thousands of traditional medicine products have obtained\nmarketing authorisation after meeting safety, quality, and efficacy\nrequirements. This situation presents an opportunity for Indonesia to\nenhance the competitiveness of its herbal industry internationally while\nstrengthening self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical raw materials, which\nhave largely depended on imports.<\/p>\n<p>Optimising biodiversity as a source of medicinal plants requires\ncontinuous research support. Fields such as phytochemistry,\nbiotechnology, molecular biology, and pharmacology play a vital role in\nidentifying active compounds and scientifically proving the efficacy of\nmedicinal plants. Through such research, the use of medicinal plants is\nnot solely based on empirical community experience but also gains\nscientific validation acceptable in the medical world. Collaboration\nbetween universities, research institutions, the pharmaceutical\nindustry, and the government is a key factor in accelerating health\nproduct innovation based on Indonesia\u2019s biological wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its enormous potential, Indonesia\u2019s biodiversity faces\nvarious challenges that could hinder its sustainable use. Deforestation,\nland conversion, forest fires, overexploitation of natural resources,\nand climate change are causing population declines in many plant\nspecies. Some endemic species are even threatened with extinction before\ntheir benefits to human health can be studied. These threats underscore\nthe need for conservation efforts that are oriented towards\nsustainability.<\/p>\n<p>Medicinal plant conservation can be carried out through in situ and\nex situ approaches. In situ conservation involves protecting species in\ntheir natural habitats through national parks, nature reserves,\nprotected forests, and other conservation areas. Meanwhile, ex situ\nconservation is conducted through botanical gardens, medicinal plant\ncollection gardens, seed banks, and germplasm banks. These two\napproaches complement each other in maintaining the continuity of\ngenetic resources while supporting research and development activities.\nAdditionally, preserving traditional community knowledge regarding the\nuse of medicinal plants must also be protected as part of the nation\u2019s\ncultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Optimising Indonesia\u2019s medicinal plants must also adhere to the\nprinciples of sustainable development. The use of natural resources\nshould not be solely oriented towards short-term economic gain but must\nalso consider environmental, social, and community welfare aspects.\nSustainable cultivation of medicinal plants, empowerment of local\nfarmers, implementation of environmentally friendly agricultural\npractices, and community-based industrial development are strategic\nsteps to create economic added value without compromising environmental\nsustainability. This approach aligns with the Sustainable Development\nGoals (SDGs), particularly in the aspects of health, responsible\nconsumption and production.<\/p>",
