        "content": "<p>Indonesia's assets in East Timor left in limbo<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA (JP): The status of the country's assets in East<br>\nTimor remains uncertain after negotiations here with<br>\nrepresentatives of the United Nations Transitional Administration<br>\nin East Timor (UNTAET) only agreed on the classification of<br>\nassets in the former province.<\/p>\n<p>The special assistant to the Indonesian foreign minister,<br>\nAbdurrachman Mattaliti, acknowledged the second round of<br>\nnegotiations did not produce concrete agreements.<\/p>\n<p>He remained optimistic, saying it was part of a long journey<br>\nto reach an agreement because the problem was complex.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have agreed in general that the problem concerning<br>\nIndonesian assets in East Timor will be solved and discussed<br>\ntogether between us,\" Abdurrachman told The Jakarta Post on<br>\nThursday after the two-day session.<\/p>\n<p>The two sides agreed the assets would be categorized in four<br>\ngroups: government assets, state-owned companies' assets, private<br>\ncompanies' assets and individual assets.<\/p>\n<p>\"We also proposed to send a small team to observe and collect<br>\ndata on the four categories of Indonesian assets in East Timor,\"<br>\nAbdurrachman added.<\/p>\n<p>On the issue of Indonesian archival data and other items of<br>\ncultural heritage, Abdurrachman said UNTAET pledged to help<br>\ncollect data.<\/p>\n<p>The two parties are slated for another round of discussions in<br>\nJune, with the next meeting expected to focus on studying<br>\nUNTAET's proposal for the establishment of a joint border<br>\ncommittee.<\/p>\n<p>East Timor, integrated into Indonesia in 1975, seceded last<br>\nyear after a self-determination referendum.<\/p>\n<p>The first round of negotiations was conducted in Denpasar,<br>\nBali, in March.<\/p>\n<p>The earlier session discussed issues such as the geographical<br>\nborder with East Nusa Tenggara, former Indonesian civil servant<br>\npensions and the status of East Timorese students in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>However, no definitive solutions were reached at the Denpasar<br>\nmeeting.
