Indonesia's assets in East Timor left in limbo<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): The status of the country's assets in East
\nTimor remains uncertain after negotiations here with
\nrepresentatives of the United Nations Transitional Administration
\nin East Timor (UNTAET) only agreed on the classification of
\nassets in the former province.<\/p>\n
The special assistant to the Indonesian foreign minister,
\nAbdurrachman Mattaliti, acknowledged the second round of
\nnegotiations did not produce concrete agreements.<\/p>\n
He remained optimistic, saying it was part of a long journey
\nto reach an agreement because the problem was complex.<\/p>\n
\"We have agreed in general that the problem concerning
\nIndonesian assets in East Timor will be solved and discussed
\ntogether between us,\" Abdurrachman told The Jakarta Post on
\nThursday after the two-day session.<\/p>\n
The two sides agreed the assets would be categorized in four
\ngroups: government assets, state-owned companies' assets, private
\ncompanies' assets and individual assets.<\/p>\n
\"We also proposed to send a small team to observe and collect
\ndata on the four categories of Indonesian assets in East Timor,\"
\nAbdurrachman added.<\/p>\n
On the issue of Indonesian archival data and other items of
\ncultural heritage, Abdurrachman said UNTAET pledged to help
\ncollect data.<\/p>\n
The two parties are slated for another round of discussions in
\nJune, with the next meeting expected to focus on studying
\nUNTAET's proposal for the establishment of a joint border
\ncommittee.<\/p>\n
East Timor, integrated into Indonesia in 1975, seceded last
\nyear after a self-determination referendum.<\/p>\n
The first round of negotiations was conducted in Denpasar,
\nBali, in March.<\/p>\n
The earlier session discussed issues such as the geographical
\nborder with East Nusa Tenggara, former Indonesian civil servant
\npensions and the status of East Timorese students in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
However, no definitive solutions were reached at the Denpasar
