Indonesians the worst drivers in the world<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): When it comes to traffic discipline, Indonesians
\nare rated among the worst in the world, a British consultant said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
David Stewart, a traffic management consultant, said in a
\nseminar in Yogyakarta that lack of discipline among Indonesian
\nmotorists is the chief cause of traffic congestions found in the
\ncountry's large cities, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
\"Compared to other developing countries, the number of
\nviolations against traffic regulations and signs in Indonesia is
\nthe highest,\" he was quoted by the news agency as saying. \"I
\nfound that almost every traffic marks and signs are violated.\"<\/p>\n
The Birmingham University graduate said that given the lack of
\ndiscipline, he was puzzled by the relatively low traffic accident
\nrate in Indonesia compared to that found in the West.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a workshop on urban traffic management training,
\nStewart said the low discipline among drivers make managing
\ntraffic in Indonesian cities difficult, and this is something
\nwhich no theory or regulations could solve.<\/p>\n
Sunyoto, a traffic management expert from Gadjah Mada
\nUniversity, told the workshop that traffic management is also a
\nmatter of culture, and any research and analysis of traffic
\nproblems should take this fact into account.<\/p>\n
In Indonesia, many rural migrants make their living from the
\nhighways, such as peddling goods to motorists, something which is
\nnot found in the West.<\/p>\n
He said traffic management and policies in Indonesia should be
\nintegrated with the overall city planning and spatial planning.<\/p>\n
Sunyoto agreed with Stewart's assessment of the lack of
\ndiscipline among motorists. \"Awareness of traffic regulations is
\nan absolute must and we have to instill this in our people since
\nchildhood,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Without discipline, no traffic management concept would be
\neffective in ensuring safety and comfort in the streets, he said.
