Indonesians seek Australian asylum<\/p>\n
AUSTRALIA: Seven Indonesians who waded ashore in Australia's
\nremote northwest a week ago are asylum seekers, immigration
\nofficials said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The seven -- four men, a woman and two children -- are from
\nWest Timor and were picked up at Cape Londonderry. They are the
\nfirst asylum seekers to arrive since a group of Vietnamese people
\nlanded more than two years ago.<\/p>\n
\"Applications for protection visas will be considered in
\naccordance with normal procedures and international obligations,\"
\nan immigration department spokesman said.<\/p>\n
The spokesman said they would stay in Darwin while \"the most
\nappropriate place of detention for the group is being
\nconsidered\".<\/p>\n
Under Australia's controversial mandatory detention policy,
\nasylum seekers who arrive without visas are locked up until their
\nclaims are processed.<\/p>\n
The surprise asylum claim follows the weekend discovery of two
\nIndonesians at a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern
\nTerritory. It is not yet clear if those men were asylum seekers
\nor fishermen who came ashore when their boat's engine failed.<\/p>\n
The men were found on Sunday in their boat near Wadeye, about
\n250 kilometers southwest of Darwin, the Northern Territory's
\ncapital. Police said they were also from Indonesia's West Timor
