Indonesianization of names<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government is insisting that all hotel and
\nrestaurant names should be \"Indonesianized\" eventually, at least
\nbefore the end of the decade.<\/p>\n
Director General of Tourism Andi Mappisamang was quoted by
\nAntara news agency as saying yesterday that trademark hotel names
\nwill be exempted from this regulation.<\/p>\n
\"The least they could do is use proper Bahasa Indonesia
\nsentence structure,\" Andi said in Surabaya on Friday night. \"So
\nit should be Hotel Melawai, not Melawai Hotel, and Hotel Anggrek
\nand not Anggrek Hotel.\"<\/p>\n
His appeal reinforced the government's current drive to
\nencourage everyone to use proper and correct Indonesian.<\/p>\n
The campaign, launched by President Soeharto on May 2, is also
\ntargeted at housing developers, restaurant and places of
\nentertainment owners who have increasingly shown preference for
\nforeign-sounding names rather than local terms.<\/p>\n
Many hotel operators in Bali have said that changing names
\nwould involve huge costs because they have printed promotional
\nbrochures, stationary and products such as soaps and napkins with
\ntheir names on them.<\/p>\n
Andi explained that the government is not asking them to
\nchange their names immediately, but hotel and restaurant
\noperators should heed the regulation and abide by it eventually.<\/p>\n
\"If they object now, we can understand, but they should aim to
\ncomplete the process by the end of the Repelita VI,\" he said
\nreferring to the current Sixth Five Year Plan which ends in 1999.<\/p>\n
\"We hope all those concerned in the tourism industry will set
