Indonesian WWF gets local head<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The World Wide Fund for Nature, true to its own
\nobjective of promoting local-based activities, has appointed an
\nIndonesian to head its Indonesian Program.<\/p>\n
Agus Purnomo, who has experience in leading various non-
\ngovernmental organizations in the country, became the WWF-
\nIndonesia Program representative and chief executive officer,
\nreplacing Russell H. Betts, starting last Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Head of the WWF Indonesian Program Communication Department,
\nKatarina Panji, told The Jakarta Post on Thursday that the
\nleadership change is part of the WWF International programs.<\/p>\n
\"WWF International is always focusing on local-based
\nactivities, where local people are expected to lead and
\nparticipate in WWF local-based organizations,\" Katarina said.<\/p>\n
\"The move will not prevent expatriates from taking part in the
\norganizations' activities,\" she added.<\/p>\n
She explained that Agus's appointment had been decided back in
\nAugust, but because he was tied up with other organizations, he
\nonly assumed his post this month.<\/p>\n
Agus's previous NGO experience include director of the
\nIndonesian Forum for the Environment and the Yayasan Pelangi, and
\nmore recently, he had been with the Rockefeller Foundation office
\nin Indonesia.<\/p>\n
In his new job, Agus will be assisted by Kim De Ridder, who
\nwas appointed WWF-Indonesian Program Managing Director in
\nDecember.<\/p>\n
Betts, in a statement announcing the move early this week,
\nsaid the change fulfilled his personal and WWF International's
\ncommitment and effort of the last seven years to create a strong
\nand viable WWF conservation program and presence in Indonesia
\nunder Indonesian leadership.<\/p>\n
Betts said he would remain a senior advisor to the Indonesian
\nprogram until the end of June to ensure a smooth transition.<\/p>\n
He said his involvement since 1989 in bringing WWF-Indonesia
\nProgram to its current status and in Indonesia conservation has
\nbeen the most challenging and rewarding experience of his
\nprofessional life.<\/p>\n
Betts said he hoped to found a new global environmental
\nconsulting firm in Geneva in July to assist WWF-International.
