The Indonesian Press Council (Dewan Pers), together with Harian\nRepublika, has issued a strong condemnation of the Israeli military\u2019s\ninterception and arrest of the humanitarian vessel Global Sumud Flotilla\n2.0 in international waters. The ship, carrying aid and logistics for\nGazan residents, also carried nine Indonesian nationals, including three\njournalists on assignment.<\/p>\n
The three journalists are Bambang Noroyono and Thoudy Badai Rifan\nBillah of Republika, and Andre Prasetyo Nugroho of Tempo TV. They were\npart of Global Peace Convoy Indonesia (GPCI), a civil society coalition\nthat departed Marmaris, Turkey, on Thursday (14 May) with 54 ships from\n70 countries.<\/p>\n
Dewan Pers issued an official statement on Monday evening (18 May)\nafter coordinating with editors-in-chief of related media. The statement\nasserted that the Israeli military action in international waters,\napproximately 310 nautical miles from Gaza, constitutes an intolerable\nviolation: \u2018Condemning the Israeli military for intercepting and\ndetaining Indonesian journalists along with other civilians in\ninternational waters while en route to Gaza, Palestine.\u2019<\/p>\n
In addition to condemnation, the Dewan Pers urged the Indonesian\nGovernment to promptly deploy diplomatic interventions to secure the\nsafety and release of the journalists and other detainees.<\/p>\n
Andi Muhyiddin, Editor-in-Chief of Republika, characterised the\ninterception as criminalisation of humanitarian missions. He emphasised\nthat volunteers and journalists carried no weapons, only medical aid and\nlogistics for Gazans under blockade. \u2018This is a serious violation of\ninternational law, universal humanitarian principles, and civil\nliberties worldwide,\u2019 he said. He added that the safety of Bambang\nNoroyono and Thoudy Badai is a top priority for the editorial team right\nnow.<\/p>\n
Andi asserted that the journalists\u2019 presence on the vessel was to\nvoice the humanitarian situation in Palestine to the world. \u2018We stand\nwith humanitarian volunteers around the world and reject any form of\ncriminalisation of humanitarian missions in international waters,\u2019 he\nconcluded.
