Indonesian music hard to define, musician says<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian music is in currently in a state of
\nflux, making it difficult to characterize, prominent musician and
\ncomposer Sukahardjana says.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a discussion on Indonesian contemporary music
\nentitled Indonesian modern music -- its development over the past
\n50 years at the Indoor Theater of the Taman Ismail Marzuki arts
\ncenter last week, Sukahardjana said that, at present, Indonesian
\nmusic is very diverse. It represents both international and
\nethnic musical genres, he said.<\/p>\n
\"We cannot make a precise definition regarding modern
\nIndonesian music,\" Sukahardjana said. Local composers may blend
\ntheir music with elements of foreign musical styles, he said,
\nwhile foreign composers may produce a mixture of foreign and
\ntraditional music. One American composer, Jody Diamond, has
\ncomposed music which includes Javanese traditional Karawitan
\nmusic, he said, adding that Indonesian musicians, such as Tony
\nPrabowo, Otto Sidharta and Harry Roesli, often utilize foreign
\nmusical idioms in their compositions.<\/p>\n
\"They all represent the Indonesian contemporary music pattern,
\nso it's very difficult to define a 'real Indonesian music',\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Friday's discussion was part of Sukahardjana's Indonesian
\nMusic Tour l995, which includes seminars, music recitals,
\ndiscussions, and the screening of films. The tour is jointly
\norganized by Sukahardjana, the Indonesian Composers Association,
\nCantus Studio and the Taman Ismail Marzuki Arts Center.
\nSukahardjana held similar discussions and musical performances
\nearlier this month in Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surakarta. He will
\nbe continuing his tour, which began in early April and is
\nscheduled to continue until July, to Semarang and Surabaya.<\/p>\n
The music tour is aimed at the sharing of experiences and
\nexpertise among Indonesian musicians and Indonesian music lovers
\nregarding the development of music in the country in the period
\nbetween l955 and l995, Sukahardjana said.<\/p>\n
\"Local music is undergoing rapid development because of
\nglobalization and, therefore, there is a lot of new musical
\nknowledge that should be shared and studied,\" the musician said.
