Indonesian maid falls from Singapore flat<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Agencies): An Indonesian maid died after falling
\nfrom a Singapore apartment, becoming the seventh foreign domestic
\nhelper to topple from a flat while cleaning windows since last
\nyear, it was reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Rini Suryanti died at the National University Hospital from
\nsevere injuries after falling from a third-story apartment
\nbelonging to her employer's sister, The Straits Times said.<\/p>\n
Police are investigating the incident. Regulations on overseas
\nmaids require they only work at the address of the official
\nemployer as designated in their work permit.<\/p>\n
The Foreign Ministry has urged employers not to assign window-
\ncleaning to maids working in high-rises. The 31-year-old woman
\ntumbled only days after starting work in the city state.<\/p>\n
Just a few days earlier a Singapore woman was sentenced to 15
\nmonths in jail for abusing her Indonesian maid.<\/p>\n
Wong Suet Peng, 37, struck the maid with a metal rod, burned
\nher with an iron and broke a bone in her foot by stepping on it,
\npolice spokesman Phillip Mah said.<\/p>\n
Wong, a housewife, was sentenced on Wednesday after pleading
\nguilty to four charges of hurting the maid, 27-year-old Winarsih
\nSukirno, Mah told the Associated Press.<\/p>\n
Wong was angry with the maid for not cleaning adequately, The
\nStraits Times newspaper quoted defense attorney Edmond Pereira as
\nsaying. The lawyer added that Wong was undergoing psychiatric
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
The abuse was revealed after Winarsih dropped notes from
\nWong's apartment to another Indonesian maid working on a lower
\nfloor, Mah said.<\/p>",
