Indonesian fashion available on the Net<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): More information about fashion in Indonesia is
\nnow available on the Internet, thanks to the initiative of
\nIndotex La Salle International College.<\/p>\n
The website (www.sistelindo.net.id\/lasalle) was launched
\nrecently in celebration of the school's first anniversary.<\/p>\n
The college, one of two international fashion schools in
\nIndonesia -- the other one is Esmod -- is part of the LaSalle
\nInternational College Group, which is already open in 12 cities
\nin Asia, Europe and North America.<\/p>\n
In creating the website, Indotex Lasalle College aims at
\nproviding foreign designers or producers with information about
\nIndonesia's textile industry.<\/p>\n
Indotex's director, Jean Giguere, said: \"We want to develop
\ntrade between Indonesia and foreign countries.\"<\/p>\n
Taruna K. Kusmayadi, the international director of the
\nAssociation of Indonesian Fashion Designers and Manufactures
\n(APPMI) agreed: \"I think it is a great means to have some
\ninformation about textiles, to find out about announcements or
\nadvertisements and above all, to get in touch with outsiders.\"<\/p>\n
Once on Indotex's website, users are invited to click one of
\ntwo icons. One icon contains information about the school, and
\nthe other one, the Indotex LaSalle Documentation Center, provides
\ngeneral information about fashions and textiles.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta school offers five programs: Fashion Design,
\nFashion Marketing, Apparel Production Management, Computer
\nGraphics\/Graphic Design and Business Administration. Each program
\nhas its own link, giving career prospects, names of courses and
\nhours. Also available is information on services and facilities
\nprovided by Indotex LaSalle to its students and about other
\nLaSalle Schools.<\/p>\n
The second part of the site is an open door to the school's
\nDocumentation Center. Nearly every page shows a room and gives
\nnews you can get on it. In reality, those four rooms feature a
\ncollection of fabrics along with their photographs.<\/p>\n
\"In the Indonesian Fabric Collection, you can have samples of
\nIndonesia's current products, made by hundreds of different
\nproducers, of woven and knitted fabrics,\" said Giguere.<\/p>\n
\"If you want to know about the different histories and
\ncultures, you may check with the Historical and Cultural Fabric
\nCollection,\" he added. This room presents an important overview
\nof the garments inherited from many regions in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The third room, the Dupont Fabric Room -- Lycra Registered
\nInnovation Center, is a library of fabrics from different parts
\nof the world containing lycra.<\/p>\n
The last page presents the IBM Internet Center. The real room
\nis connected to the Internet and provides access to the IBM
\nGlobal Network for Styles and Trends Worldwide Research. You can
\nbe connected to six fashion links from this page.<\/p>\n
Until now, the Indotex La Salle College site has been mostly a
\npromotional site because it gives written data on the school
\nwithout enabling people to get more in-depth information.<\/p>\n
Giguere explained that all the data won't be computerized
\nbecause of the expensive costs. People who are interested must
\nphysically go to Indotex LaSalle College, in the Jakarta
\nFairground, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The Indotex site is the first found on the Internet to gather
\ninformation on Indonesian fashion. Some newspapers deliver some
\ndata in their sites and a few Indonesian textile companies have
\ntheir own homepages. Other general websites -- such as
\nwww.indopro.com -- provide users with information on Indonesia's
\nindustry will give lists of Indonesian textile manufacturers.<\/p>\n
Accordingly, it has saved four pages for a list of Indonesian
\ndesigners, textile manufacturers, garment manufacturers and
\nassociations. It has information on names, addresses, phone
\nnumbers and facsimile numbers for 2,258 entities. Unfortunately,
\ne-mail addresses are absent from the list.<\/p>\n
According to Giguere, most firms and designers on the list did
\nnot have an e-mail address.<\/p>\n
The Indotex website can seem insignificant compared to one by
\nFashion Institute Design and Merchandising, a two-year-old school
\nbased in the U.S. Users can find, among other things, archives,
\ngalleries and exhibits of garments, and can be connected to many
\nfashion-related sites, in its impressive homepage (www.fidm.com).<\/p>\n
It seems the Indotex website needs more work. A search engine
\nand faster speed is required.<\/p>\n
It is planned that in the future, the site would provide
\ndesigns, to encourage people to get samples or buy products but
\nuntil then, the response from designers has not substantial.<\/p>\n
Taruna said that APPMI has been offered to do this but it
\nhasn't finished collecting all the data yet.<\/p>\n
\"We have to know product capacity, local markets and export
\nfigures before submitting data,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The director of Indotex LaSalle College is definitively
\nconvinced of the future of the Internet and its assets.
\nHopefully, this new Indonesian venture will also appeal to local
\nand foreign designers and manufacturers.<\/p>",
