Indonesian envoys told to present good image<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Abdurrahman Wahid asked Indonesian
\nenvoys to present a good image of the country in their respective
\nembassies amid continuing crisis in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"As Indonesian envoys, you should strive to improve our
\ncountry's image within the international community, especially
\nduring the continuing national crisis,\" Abdurrahman said in the
\nswearing in ceremony of five Indonesian ambassadors on Monday.<\/p>\n
The five new ambassadors were sworn in by Vice President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri, who had canceled her trip to Palembang,
\nSouth Sumatra, to fulfill the President's request for her to lead
\nthe ceremony at the State Palace.<\/p>\n
Among the new envoys were two representatives from political
\nparties, Golkar Party senior politician Eki Syahruddin as
\nambassador to Canada, and Dachlan Abdul Hamied from the Crescent
\nStar Party as ambassador to Iraq.<\/p>\n
The two new ambassadors are legislators at the House of
\nRepresentatives.<\/p>\n
Ministry of Foreign Affairs' former director general for the
\nAssociation of South East Asian Nations Adian Silalahi was sworn
\nin as ambassador to France.<\/p>\n
Another two career diplomats from the foreign ministry were
\nsworn in as ambassadors; Musma Musa Abbas for Tunisia and Susanto
\nSutoyo for New Zealand.<\/p>\n
The post in New Zealand should have been filled by former
\nminister Freddy Numberi, however, the House of Representatives
\nsuggested the retired admiral would be more suited to be
\nstationed in another country other than New Zealand.<\/p>\n
In April, the President swore in four ambassadors, Sudjadnan
\nParnohadiningrat for Australia, Makmur Widodo as Indonesian
\nPermanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Toto
\nSoegiharto for Rumania and A. A. Kustia, the only one who is not
\ncareer diplomat, from the Indonesian Military (TNI) for China.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Megawati also presented the honorary Bintang Yudha
\nPratama for distinguished service to Singaporean Military Chief
\nMaj. Gen. Lim Chuan Poh.<\/p>\n
The presentation of the Bintang Yudha Pratama is usually
\nconducted by the TNI chief. However, TNI Chief Widodo A.S. was
\npresented with a similar military honor a few months ago by the
\nSingaporean president therefore Indonesia reciprocated the
