Indonesian boxers match Cuban juniors in training<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian boxers undergoing a series of
\ntraining stints for the Kuala Lumpur 2001 Southeast Asian (SEA)
\nGames matched their Cuban sparring partners, an official said on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
\"Our boxers fought members of the Cuban under-19 national team
\nwho are slightly more skillful. But our boxers have also shown
\nimprovement,\" deputy secretary-general of the Indonesian Amateur
\nBoxing Association (Pertina) Didit Soedijoto said.<\/p>\n
\"Not only their physical endurance, but they have polished
\ntheir boxing skills and strategy,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Pertina sent six boxers to Cuba. They are Bonix Saweho in the
\n45kg class, David Isikiwar in the 60kg lightweight, Joko Suryono
\nin the 52kg light middleweight, Wellem Papilaya in the 63.5kg
\nlight welterweight, Hendrik Simangunsong in the 75kg
\nmiddleweight, and Albert Papilaya in the 81kg light heavyweight
\nclass.<\/p>\n
Didit asserted that although younger, the Cuban boxers were of
\nhigh quality.<\/p>\n
\"We all know that Cuba is one of amateur boxing's strongest
\ncountries. Besides, the junior boxers come from the Havana-based
\nTraining Center for Higher Results (CEAR),\" he said.<\/p>\n
In the past, Indonesian boxers sparred with senior Cuban
\ncounterparts who were proven a class apart.<\/p>\n
\"They said the Cubans 'vanished' when they came under attack,\"
\nDidi quoted some boxers who previously underwent a stint in Cuba.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian boxers were also engaged in sparring bouts with
\nAlgerian national boxers who are also attending a training
\nsession in Costa Azul, Havana.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Indian billiards and snooker coach Michael Parera
\narrived here on Monday to take charge of the national team bound
\nfor the SEA Games.<\/p>\n
\"Parera will train Sayumin Teng, Teng Khee Sien and Fernandi
\nin snooker as well as Muslim, Hasan Manfaluti and Rahmatullah in
\nEnglish billiards events,\" national coach Basuki Santoso was
\nquoted as saying by Antara.<\/p>\n
\"Parera is one of the world's best coaches and has
\nan international reputation. We expect his presence will boost
\nour players' motivation as well as their skills,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Snooker and Billiards Association (Pobsi) hired
\nParera for a two-week contract worth some Rp 40 million
\n(US$4,700).<\/p>\n
Athletes from Malaysia and the Philippines will be the
\ntoughest opponents since both countries are the sports'
\npowerhouse in the region.<\/p>\n
\"We haven't set a medal target in either event but we still
\nhave a chance to steal medals. We are only eyeing two gold medals
\nin the pool events,\" said Basuki.<\/p>\n
In a separate development, the Indonesian Volleyball
\nAssociation (PBVSI) has named its SEA Games squad.<\/p>\n
Andri Widiatmoko, Zaenudin, Marjoko Sigit, Eko Purnomo
\nOktavian, Uus Susyansah, Erwin Rusni, Hadi Esmanto, Marwan
\nSutrisno, Johan Rachmadi, Susilo Hari Wibowo, and Iman Agus
\nFaizal will play in the men's division under the supervision of
\ncoaches Wienarto and Ayub Hidayat.<\/p>\n
In the women's division, the players are Wenny Evitasari,
\nSentia Angelita, Purwitasari, Fenni Djumiati Sitti Nurjanah, Sri
\nJulieanti Johar, Santi Wijayanti, Anna Yohana, Siswati, Dhika
\nChristina, Magda Roselani, and Rohmi Vidi Asnika. They are being
\ntrained by Michio Fujiwara of Japan and Machfud Irsjada. (nvn)<\/p>",
