Indonesian archers miss overseas tryout<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian women's archery team will miss
\nits last chance for an overseas tryout in Slovenia, its final
\ntune-up prior to the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
National Olympic team project officer Subardi Suar told The
\nJakarta Post and the RCTI TV station yesterday that the
\norganizers of the 25th Outdoor Target Archery Championships in
\nKranjskagora, Slovenia ruled out any participation of countries
\noutside Europe and the Mediterranian.<\/p>\n
The tournament will take place from June 17 to June 23.<\/p>\n
Subardi indicated while observing a training session at the
\nSenayan archery range that there will be no tryout abroad for the
\nwomen archers. Instead, they will only play a simulation game in
\ntwo weeks.<\/p>\n
\"I know that an overseas stint is very important for the
\nteam's preparation, both technically and mentally. But I don't
\nthink that the tryout is the only way to observe their progress,\"
\nSubardi argued.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the archery team had canceled its plan to take part
\nin an Olympic warm-up tournament in Atlanta, held from April 9 to
\nApril 14 at the venue designated for the Games. Coach Daniel
\nLumalesil dropped the plan after learning that his players
\nperformed poorly in several previous tournaments.<\/p>\n
National Sports Council vice chairman Arie Sudewo and Vice
\nPresident of the Citibank Asia-Pacific Consumer Bank Farid Aidid
\nwatched yesterday's scoring test.<\/p>\n
Nurfitriyana Saiman Lantang, Dahliana, Hamdiah Damanhuri,
\njuniors Elizabeth Sumampouw and Suhartini, as well as veteran
\nPurnama Pandiangan, took part in the scoring test yesterday.<\/p>\n
Nurfitriyana hit the highest score of 631 out of possible 720
\npoints, followed by Dahliana with 629 and Hamdiah with 604.<\/p>\n
The Olympic archery elimination competition requires 64 female
\narchers to hit a 70-meter target in 12 series, during each of
\nwhich they have to shoot six arrows.<\/p>\n
Subardi said that the three-member national Olympic archery
\nteam will be announced by the end of this month.<\/p>\n
Archery has been considered one of Indonesia's potential
\nmedal-winning sports at the Olympics, but Subardi declined to
\ntalk about the prospects.<\/p>\n
\"I'm optimistic that the team will do their best. Hopefully
\nthey can earn a silver medal as they did in Seoul eight years
\nago,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Nurfitriyana, Purnama and Kusumawardhani formed a silver
\nwinning team in the 1988 Olympics, giving Indonesia its first-
