        "content": "<p>Indonesia will hold forex club forum<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will host a congress of the South East<br>\nAsia Forum of foreign exchange clubs from Sept. 5 to Sept. 7 in<br>\nDenpasar, Bali.<\/p>\n<p>Chairwoman of the organizing committee, Chatarina Widjaja, who<br>\nis also a Bank Dagang Nasional Indonesia (BDNI) director said<br>\nyesterday that about 150 participants were expected to take part<br>\nin the upcoming congress.<\/p>\n<p>South East Asia Forum covers foreign exchange clubs from<br>\nIndonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>She said foreign exchange clubs from Myanmar, Vietnam and<br>\nIndia would be invited to join the congress as observers.<\/p>\n<p>She said the congress, called &apos;South East Asia towards the<br>\nyear 2000&apos;, would feature expert speakers, including Andrew<br>\nFerris, Chief Economist of Bank of America (BOA), Stuart Gulliver<br>\nof HSBC Markets in Hongkong and Mark Mobious, fund manager of<br>\nTempletion International.<\/p>\n<p>Chatarina said Ferris would talk about the impact of the macro<br>\neconomic condition in Southeast Asian countries, Gulliver would<br>\ndiscuss Hongkong as a financial center after the year 1997 and<br>\nMobious would share his investment experience in Southeast Asian<br>\ncountries.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia will also host the 41st World Congress of foreign<br>\nexchange clubs in Jakarta in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>World Congress chairman, Loeki S Putra said that about 1,600<br>\nparticipants from 62 countries were expected to join the<br>\ncongress.<\/p>\n<p>Loeki, who is also a director of Bank Tiara Indonesia, said<br>\nthe coming conference was expected to make Jakarta recognized as<br>\none of the global financial centers.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Indonesian Foreign Exchange Club (Forexindo),<br>\nJeffrey Turangan, said foreign exchange transactions in Jakarta<br>\nhad increased steadily since 1990.<\/p>\n<p>He said the total daily transaction value of foreign exchange,<br>\nwhich was about US$1 billion in early 1990, was now an average<br>\n$15 billion.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That shows how strong the country is,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that although the value was still lower than<br>\nSingapore&apos;s daily average of $100 billion, foreign investors had<br>\nrecognized Indonesia, and Malaysia and the Philippines as<br>\nattractive investment places.<\/p>\n<p>He said Indonesia had maintained a sound macro economic<br>\ncondition with its lower inflation rate. In fiscal 1996\/1997<br>\n(ended in March), Indonesia&apos;s inflation rate was 5.17 percent.<br>\n(09)<\/p>",
