        "content": "<p>Indonesia, U.S. hold naval exercises<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Navy and its American counterpart<br>\nhave shrugged off the strained relationship between their<br>\ngovernments as they are taking part in an annual series of<br>\ndisaster relief simulation exercises.<\/p>\n<p>Called CARAT-7\/01, the joint exercises began on May 5 and will<br>\nfinish on May 26. The program involves 1,571 personnel of the<br>\nIndonesian Navy and 500 personnel of the U.S. Navy who are based<br>\nin Okinawa, Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\"The relationship between us (the Indonesian and the U.S.<br>\nNavy) is not disturbed, even though the U.S. government has<br>\nimposed a military embargo on our country,\" Navy Chief of Staff<br>\nAdm. Indroko Sastrowiryono said at the Navy Western Fleet<br>\nheadquarters here on Thursday after a ceremony which marked the<br>\nofficial start to the training.<\/p>\n<p>Present at the opening ceremony were, among others, U.S.<br>\nAmbassador to Indonesia Robert S. Gelbard and the Chief of Marine<br>\nCorps Rear Adm. Harry Triono.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving in Tanjung Priok port on Thursday for the joint<br>\nexercise were USS Wadsworth, USS Rushmore and USS<br>\nCurts. The Indonesian Navy is deploying Ki Hajar Dewantara, KRI<br>\nTanjung Kambani, and KRI Nala-363 warships.<\/p>\n<p>The joint exercise is the seventh in as many years.<\/p>\n<p>During the program, participants will measure their skills in,<br>\namong others, screen exercise, diving tactics maneuvering,<br>\nsupport force ashore and deck landing. They will also carry out<br>\nhumanitarian missions in areas which are still recovering from<br>\nrecent natural disasters and other civic missions, mostly aimed<br>\nat improving people's health.<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. Embassy statement said the program dubbed \"Cooperation<br>\nAfloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2001\" was part of a wider<br>\nexercise involving Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore<br>\nand Thailand.
