        "content": "<p>\u201cThe large scale of ASEAN-China relations must translate into\ntangible benefits for the people, supply chain resilience, and the\nability to face shocks,\u201d Sugiono said in Manila on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ASEAN-China\ntrade reached US$772.4 billion in 2024, accounting for approximately\none-fifth of ASEAN\u2019s total trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just a number. Behind it are jobs, markets, supply\nchains, and people\u2019s welfare,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia is encouraging the optimization of the Regional\nComprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the ASEAN-China Free Trade\nArea (ACFTA) 3.0 to strengthen economic integration that is more\npractical, inclusive, and better prepared to address future\nchallenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe region\u2019s economic strength is not measured solely by the value\nof trade, but also by the extent to which its benefits reach people and\nbusinesses beyond major growth centers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to strengthening trade, Indonesia is promoting an\nASEAN-China partnership that is better equipped to cushion the region\nagainst the impacts of global uncertainty, the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized that ASEAN centrality and the ASEAN Outlook on the\nIndo-Pacific (AOIP) must remain the foundation of regional\nstability.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sugiono, both principles should also support inclusive,\ntransparent, and rules-based cooperation amid growing geopolitical\nrivalry.<\/p>\n<p>He added that this approach should also be reflected in maritime\ncooperation, as regional waters serve as vital routes for trade,\nconnectivity, and energy and food security.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia is once again pushing for the completion of an effective\nand substantive Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea based on\ninternational law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on\nthe Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).<\/p>\n<p>Sugiono said be not only a driver of growth but also a a strong COC\nwould demonstrate the ability of regional countries to maintain\nstability and shape their own future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ASEAN-China partnership must be not only a driver of growth but\nalso a pillar of regional peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>This year marks the 35th anniversary of the ASEAN-China Dialogue\nPartnership and the fifth anniversary of the two sides\u2019 Comprehensive\nStrategic Partnership.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting also issued a joint statement on the impact of\ndevelopments in the Middle East and on strengthening regional energy\ncooperation, including joint responses and energy security.<\/p>\n<p>Related news: Indonesia pushes for South China Sea CoC this year<\/p>\n<p>Related news: Indonesia promotes six hub airports to boost\nASEAN-China connectivity<\/p>\n<p>Translator: Asri Mayang Sari<\/p>",
