Indonesia underrepresented at CAEXPO<\/p>\n

Indonesia seemed ill-prepared for the China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO)
\nif the number of participants was any measure. The country with
\nthe second largest population in the region after China
\nregistered just 26 participants.<\/p>\n
They included the Argo Manunggal Group, M. Craft, PT Bumi
\nTangerang Mesindotama, the Dharma Bhakti Astra Foundation,
\nBeverley Jewelry, Darma Jamu Godok, Matahari Putra Prima, Daya
\nTechnology, PT Indo Farma, PT Antar Niaga Nusantara, Mantha Tour
\nand Istana Walet Wong Coco.<\/p>\n
But not all of them made it to the main event as 10 booths in
\nthe Indonesia section were left vacant for the duration of the
\nexpo from Oct. 19 to Oct. 22.<\/p>\n
Among Indonesia's neighboring countries, Malaysia recorded the
\nhighest number of participants with 163 exhibitors followed by
\nThailand (111), Vietnam (69), Cambodia (26) and Myanmar (23) out
\nof nearly 2,000 exhibitors in total.<\/p>\n
Singapore had, surprisingly, only two particpants in
\nattendance. But as Indonesia's trade and industry minister Mari
\nPangestu said here, the number of participants was not
\nnecessarily a reflection of the seriousness of the country in
\ntaking part in the expo.<\/p>\n
Big companies usually already have their own network in China,
\nso they don't necessarily see the benefit of taking part in the
\nexpo, she said.<\/p>\n
\"But the participation of big companies at the expo does
\nindicate the size of a country's economy,\" she told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
Mari said her ministry would see to it that more companies
\ntook part in the next expo, particularly small- and medium-size
\nenterprises. The China-ASEAN Business Council has put the
\npromotion of SMEs at the top of its agenda for next year.<\/p>\n
As host, China displayed its cutting-edge technologies,
\nproducts and solutions. Products ranged from machinery to
\nelectronics, from IT gadgets to automobiles.<\/p>\n
Unlike last year, the expo was only open to the public on the
\nlast of the four days.<\/p>\n
\"This was to avoid overcrowding,\" said a member of the expo
\nstaff. On the first three days the expo was open to
\nbusinesspeople, government officials and professionals.<\/p>",
