Indonesia triumphs in SEA rowing<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Junior athletes spurred the Indonesian team on
\nto triumph in the fourth Southeast Asian Rowing Championship in
\nPasir Ris, Singapore over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Budiman Setiawan, secretary-general of the Indonesian Rowing
\nAssociation, said in his release yesterday that the national male
\nand female rowers won the two prestigious events on the final
\nday, Sunday, to complete their medal haul of eight golds, five
\nsilvers and four bronzes.<\/p>\n
The Philippines finished a distant second with four golds, two
\nsilvers and two bronzes, followed by Myanmar which collected two
\ngolds, four silvers and five bronzes.<\/p>\n
A total of 109 rowers from six ASEAN members and Cambodia
\njoined the three-day competition. The annual event will move to
\nIndonesia next year.<\/p>\n
The Southeast Asian Rowing Federation also held a congress
\nsimultaneously with the competition. The congress elected Rear
\nAdmiral (ret.) Sumartono the new chairman of the confederation.<\/p>\n
The congress also criticized Thailand for not adopting rowing
\nin the medal events for the 18th SEA Games, slated for Dec. 9 to
\n17 in Chiang Mai. Thailand took only a bronze in Pasir Ris.<\/p>\n
The upcoming SEA Games will have seven gold medals at stake in
\ntraditional boat races, instead of rowing. Indonesia played down
\nits formidable clean sweep in the previous Games, saying that it
\nnow sets its sights on just four golds in Chiang Mai. (amd)<\/p>",
