Indonesia to replant rubber next year<\/p>\n

Indonesia, the world's second largest rubber producer after
\nThailand, will rehabilitate 100,000 hectares of rubber
\nplantations a year for four years from 2002 to cut output and
\nlift prices, the Agriculture Ministry said.<\/p>\n
Director General of Plantations Agus Pakpahan said on Monday
\nthat the plan was Indonesia's way of fulfilling a pact made in
\nSeptember with other top producers Thailand and Malaysia to each
\nreduce output by four percent next year.<\/p>\n
It would also dovetail with Indonesia's efforts to add value
\nto its rubber industry, Pakpahan told reporters.<\/p>\n
\"Over the next four years we will rehabilitate 100,000
\nhectares per year...It's also because our rubber trees are
\nageing,\" Pakpahan told reporters.<\/p>\n
Pakpahan said financing of the rehabilitation program was
\nstill being discussed. He did not elaborate.<\/p>\n
While waiting for new trees from replanting to produce, the
\ngovernment planned to build more rubber-based industries,
\nPakpahan added.<\/p>\n
\"We are going to restructure our rubber industry, which
\ncurrently produces only latex and block rubber, so they can
\nprocess the rubber wood and make other rubber-based products,\"
\nPakpahan said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia expects the rehabilitation efforts could help boost
\nproductivity of its rubber trees from 600 kg per hectare to two
\ntons per hectare in the longer term, he said.<\/p>\n
\"We expect our rubber-based industries to have grown rapidly
\nby the time our productivity rises,\" he added.<\/p>",
