        "content": "<p>Indonesia to replant rubber next year<\/p>\n<p>Reuters, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia, the world's second largest rubber producer after<br>\nThailand, will rehabilitate 100,000 hectares of rubber<br>\nplantations a year for four years from 2002 to cut output and<br>\nlift prices, the Agriculture Ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>Director General of Plantations Agus Pakpahan said on Monday<br>\nthat the plan was Indonesia's way of fulfilling a pact made in<br>\nSeptember with other top producers Thailand and Malaysia to each<br>\nreduce output by four percent next year.<\/p>\n<p>It would also dovetail with Indonesia's efforts to add value<br>\nto its rubber industry, Pakpahan told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\"Over the next four years we will rehabilitate 100,000<br>\nhectares per year...It's also because our rubber trees are<br>\nageing,\" Pakpahan told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Pakpahan said financing of the rehabilitation program was<br>\nstill being discussed. He did not elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>While waiting for new trees from replanting to produce, the<br>\ngovernment planned to build more rubber-based industries,<br>\nPakpahan added.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are going to restructure our rubber industry, which<br>\ncurrently produces only latex and block rubber, so they can<br>\nprocess the rubber wood and make other rubber-based products,\"<br>\nPakpahan said.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia expects the rehabilitation efforts could help boost<br>\nproductivity of its rubber trees from 600 kg per hectare to two<br>\ntons per hectare in the longer term, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"We expect our rubber-based industries to have grown rapidly<br>\nby the time our productivity rises,\" he added.<\/p>",
