        "content": "<p>Indonesia to promote exports to Japan<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia is to hold a trade exhibition in the<br>\ncity of Kobe in a bid to boost exports to Japanese markets.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the National Agency for Export Development,<br>\nMuchtar, said yesterday that about 40 small and medium-scale<br>\ncompanies would participate at the Indonesian Solo Exhibition, to<br>\nbe held from Sept. 17 to Sept. 21.<\/p>\n<p>The trade mission is particularly aiming to increase<br>\nIndonesia&apos;s exports to Japan in areas where there are many non-<br>\ntariff barriers.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Japan has a really protective market, and we expect to break<br>\nthrough with our trade mission,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the exhibition would introduce new products to the<br>\nJapanese market, in addition to showcasing existing export<br>\ncommodities, such as furniture and wood products.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the textiles, garment, cosmetics, leather<br>\nproducts, footwear, furniture, ceramics, bicycle, and<br>\nagricultural and fishery industries will make up the bulk of the<br>\nmission.<\/p>\n<p>Agency&apos;s data shows Indonesia&apos;s exports to Japan exceeded<br>\nUS$12.88 million last year, accounting for 18.4 percent of the<br>\ncountry&apos;s total exports.<\/p>\n<p>They included wood products, shrimps, garments, aluminum<br>\nproducts, coal, nickel, textiles, furniture, steel, coffee, tuna,<br>\nand shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia&apos;s exports to Japan have grown by an average of 3.6<br>\npercent a year in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>Muchtar said the sluggish growth was partially caused by the<br>\nrecent depreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar, and<br>\nbecause of the lower competitiveness of Indonesian products.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged that the rupiah&apos;s slump against the U.S.<br>\ndollar would improve the competitiveness of the Indonesian<br>\nexports, but said exporters should not be buoyed by such a<br>\nsituation.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Our aim is to raise exports, whether the currency depreciates<br>\nor appreciates,&quot; he said.
