        "content": "<p>Indonesia to host Asian Physics Olympiad<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will host the first Asian Physics<br>\nOlympiad as it attempts to increase students' interest in the<br>\nsubject, an official said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Director General of Elementary and Secondary Education Indra<br>\nDjati Sidi said the event would serve as a forum to promote<br>\nphysics among students.<\/p>\n<p>Physicists have expressed concern about the widening gap in<br>\nthe ratio of physicists compared to the country's population.<\/p>\n<p>\"Right now we only have 600 physicists who hold doctorates.<br>\nIdeally we should have 100,000 physicists with the same<br>\nqualification, considering our 200 million citizens,\" physicist<br>\nYohannes Surya said.<\/p>\n<p>Yohannes will head the Indonesian team at the Asian Physics<br>\nOlympiad, which will be held from April 24 to May 2 at the Pelita<br>\nHarapan school in Karawaci, Tangerang.<\/p>\n<p>Yohannes said 17 countries had confirmed their participation<br>\nin the event, including the People's Republic of China, India,<br>\nSingapore, Taiwan and Australia, which will attend as a guest<br>\nparticipants.<\/p>\n<p>Yohannes said there were 1,900 high school students who<br>\ninitially applied for the event, out of which 35 were picked to<br>\ntake part in the final selection held in Jakarta. After a one-<br>\nmonth process, eight students were selected for the Olympiad.<\/p>\n<p>According to organizers, a number of special programs will<br>\nhighlight the event.<\/p>\n<p>About 600 Indonesian physics teachers will hold a conference<br>\nto discuss the physics curriculum. Other programs include a<br>\nscience fair and talk shows.<\/p>\n<p>The Asian Physics Olympiad will serve as a warm-up for the<br>\n31st International Physics Olympiad in Leicester, England, in<br>\nJuly.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has experienced some success in the international<br>\nevent, winning a gold medal in last year's Olympiad in Padova,<br>\nItaly.
