The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that Indonesia\nwill determine its supply commitments to ASEAN energy security based on\nnational interests and the needs it faces. \u201cNational interest is the\nbarometer for what we can pledge, because the situation we are facing is\nnot only faced by one country alone,\u201d said Foreign Ministry spokesperson\nVahd Nabyl A. Mulachela following a media briefing in Jakarta on\nThursday.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson noted that energy security was one of the issues\ndiscussed at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers\u2019 meeting, being one of the\naspects most affected by the conflict in the Middle East. Nabyl said\nthat Indonesia and other ASEAN member states assess that the impact of\nthe conflict in the region affects areas outside the region, including\nthe energy sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you look at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers\u2019 statement on the\nsituation in the Middle East, matters related to the impact of the\nconflict on countries outside the Middle East region are also a\nconcern,\u201d Nabyl said. Therefore, strengthening energy security became a\nshared focus during the meeting.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Nabyl mentioned that broadly speaking, the interest in\nsecuring energy security is a concern for all ASEAN member states,\naffirming that all share the same goal of ensuring that energy supplies\ncan be met. \u201cRegarding the technical mechanisms, this of course also\ndepends on how far these negotiations progress. But as long as we all\nshare the same goal, I think the effort to resolve this can hopefully\nremain on schedule,\u201d Nabyl stated.<\/p>\n
Previously in May 2026, ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn\nconfirmed that the ratification process for the ASEAN Petroleum Security\nAgreement (APSA) would be completed before the 49th ASEAN Summit,\nscheduled for the end of the year. The agreement, in addition to\nenhancing regional cooperation and integration in the energy sector,\nallows ASEAN members to assist each other in the event of fuel\nshortages. The APSA mechanism enables member states to supply fuel to\nother members experiencing a shortage of at least 10 percent of their\ndomestic needs.
