Indonesia still attractive for foreign investment<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has the potential to become the most
\nattractive country for foreign investment, said Chairman of
\nHarvest International Inc. Harvey Goldstein.<\/p>\n
Goldstein told a two-day seminar on joint ventures, which
\nended yesterday, that Indonesia's single-digit inflation and 18
\nmajor deregulation policy packages released since 1982 offer
\nadvantages to foreign investors.<\/p>\n
In spite of the labor riots which occurred in Medan, North
\nSumatra last week, Goldstein cited Indonesia's low labor wages,
\npolitical stability and large consumer market as factors which
\nmake Indonesia attractive for foreign investment.<\/p>\n
However, Goldstein said several shortcomings remain to hamper
\nforeign investment in Indonesia, such as the divestiture laws
\n(Pakto 1993) which require divestment to minority shareholders
\nwithin 20 years of initial operation, weak human resource
\ndevelopment and monopolistic practices by various strategic
\nsectors.<\/p>\n
He added that special treatment of elite businessmen, non-
\ntransparent investment regulations and land title rules are some
\nimpediments to foreign investment in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Indonesia needs to refocus its economic and investment
\npolicies and allow greater domestic market access to foreign
\ninvestors due to increased competition from other Asian
