Indonesia regrets Pakistan's tests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia \"deeply regrets\" Pakistan's decision
\nto conduct five underground nuclear tests on Thursday, Minister
\nof Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas said yesterday.<\/p>\n
As party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and signatory to the
\nConvention for Test Ban Treaty, Indonesia \"cannot justify nuclear
\narms tests by any country, including Pakistan\", Alatas said in a
\nstatement released by his office.<\/p>\n
Indonesia took the same stance when India conducted nuclear
\ntests early this month, he noted.<\/p>\n
The series of nuclear tests has inevitably heightened tension
\nin subcontinent South Asia, set off a regional nuclear arms race
\nand put the world further away from its non-proliferation and
\nnuclear disarmament goals, which the international community has
\npursued since the first atomic bomb was detonated, Alatas said.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia respects the sovereignty of every country to
\ndetermine its own national interests, but as a country that fully
\nadheres to the principles and objectives of a nuclear-free world,
\nwe are of the opinion that national security policy should be
\npursued without the use of arms,\" he added.<\/p>",
