Indonesia, Qatar to open embassies<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Qatar and Indonesia yesterday agreed to enhance
\nbilateral relations by opening embassies in their respective
\ncapitals and forging a set of agreements to boost economic ties.<\/p>\n
\"The countries are on the way to establishing resident
\nembassies in their capitals,\" said Indonesian Minister of Foreign
\nAffairs Ali Alatas after meeting with Qatar Foreign Minister
\nSheik Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al-Thani here yesterday.<\/p>\n
Alatas declined to state exactly when the embassies would be
\nset up, saying only that it would be soon.<\/p>\n
The state of Qatar is currently accredited to the Indonesian
\nembassy in Kuwait, while Qatar's interests here are represented
\nby their embassy in Islamabad.<\/p>\n
Al-Thani is scheduled to leave today after a two-day goodwill
\nvisit here, which is part of a 12-day regional tour which
\nincludes Malaysia and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
Earlier yesterday Al-Thani paid a courtesy call on Vice
\nPresident Try Sutrisno and conveyed an invitation for him to
\nvisit Qatar.<\/p>\n
Both ministers revealed yesterday that they are pressing hard
\nto formulate agreements that are expected to strengthen economic
\ncooperation.<\/p>\n
The agreements includes areas of economic and technical
\ncooperation, protection and promotion of investment, along with
\nthe avoidance of double taxation.<\/p>\n
To facilitate relations, a joint commission was formed with
\nthe task of holding periodical meetings to review and further
\noptimize progress in Qatar-Indonesia relations. (mds)<\/p>",
