\u201cStarting last year, we rolled out mandatory screening for 280\nmillion Indonesians, including newborns, and have reached 70 million so\nfar,\u201d he said in Badung District, Bali, on Friday, referring to the\ngovernment\u2019s nationwide Free Health Screening (CKG) program.<\/p>\n
He delivered the remarks during the 67th Annual World Congress of the\nInternational College of Angiology (ICA) 2026, held in conjunction with\nthe 6th Indonesian Vascular Annual Scientific Congress (IndoVASC).<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year, our target is early detection for 136 million people.\nHopefully, by 2029, 280 million Indonesians will have their clinical\ndata screened annually,\u201d Budi said, adding that the effort aims to\nprevent patients from seeking treatment at advanced stages.<\/p>\n
Alongside early detection, the Health Ministry\u2019s secondary priority\nis expanding access to Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI),\ncommonly known as heart stenting.<\/p>\n
Budi noted that the high fatality rate from heart disease largely\nstems from a acute shortage of PCI services across Indonesia.<\/p>\n
When he first took office, only 43 of the country\u2019s 514 districts and\ncities could perform the procedure.<\/p>\n
However, 151 districts and cities are now equipped to offer PCI\nservices.<\/p>\n
The ministry aims to expand coverage to 200 locations this year and\nachieve nationwide access by the end of 2027, the minister added.<\/p>\n
He urged the public to actively participate in early screenings,\nnoting that these government efforts aim to raise the national average\nlife expectancy from 72 to 76 years.<\/p>\n
IndoVASC organizing committee head Iwan Dakota added that the global\ncongress\u2014attended by 600 international experts\u2014will bolster scientific\ncollaboration while enhancing the skills of Indonesian healthcare\nworkers in managing cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n
In Indonesia, coronary heart disease remains the most prevalent\ncardiovascular condition and the leading cause of death.<\/p>\n
It is followed by heart valve disease, which is frequently triggered\nby rheumatic heart disease resulting from untreated childhood throat\ninfections.<\/p>\n
Dakota estimated that coronary heart disease accounts for more than\n50 percent of all heart disease cases in the country, while heart valve\ndisease comprises about 20 to 30 percent.<\/p>\n
The remaining cases stem primarily from hypertension and congenital\nheart defects.<\/p>\n
He emphasized that the most effective way to combat these figures is\nraising public awareness through routine screenings for blood pressure,\ncholesterol, and diabetes at primary healthcare centers before\nconditions escalate.<\/p>\n
