Indonesia promoting bamboo-based products<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will use the fourth international
\ncongress on bamboo in Bali this June to introduce its bamboo
\nproducts to the world, local organizers of the gathering said.<\/p>\n
The congress, to be held in Ubud, is jointly organized by the
\nBambu Lingkungan Lestari Foundation, The Indonesian Institute of
\nSciences (LIPI) and the government.<\/p>\n
\"It will be a good start to promote our bamboo products
\nworldwide,\" foundation activist Emil Salim told journalists on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Although Indonesia is rich in bamboo, many people do not know
\nits economic values, added the former minister of population and
\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has to compete with the world's leading bamboo
\nproducers, such as China and Japan, Emil said.<\/p>\n
Elizabeth Widjaya, chairperson of the organizing committee,
\nexplained that bamboo is used extensively in various land
\npreservation projects in several provinces.<\/p>\n
Bamboo can reduce the level of air and sound pollution in
\nurban areas, she said. It is also one of best alternatives for
\nbuilding materials.<\/p>\n
\"Bamboo has long been associated with poor-quality houses in
\nkampongs,\" Soeryono, a professor of civil engineering at the
\nBandung Institute of Technology explained.<\/p>\n
Progress in bamboo preservation technology has enabled people
\nto produce high-quality building materials, furniture and art
\npieces, he said.<\/p>\n
The congress on bamboo is held every three years under the
\nsupervision of the International Bamboo Association, the
\nInternational Development Research Center and the International
\nNetwork of Bamboo and Rattan. The first congress was held in
\nPuerto Rico in l985, the second in France and the third congress
\ntook place in Japan.<\/p>\n
This year's meeting will focus on five major topics: bamboo
\ncultivation and preservation, the value of bamboo, biodiversity,
\ngenetic resources and bamboo housing.<\/p>\n
Keynote speakers include prominent ecologist Paul Hawkin and
\nfuturist John Naisbitt. The meeting will also be attended by
\nbamboo experts, architects, businessmen, musicians and artists,
\ncoming from the all over the world.<\/p>\n
Various cultural activities, including a house designing
\ncompetition, music and dance performances and a trade exhibition,
