Jakarta (ANTARA News) - PT Indonesia Power has invested US$100 million to optimize the operation of three hydropower plants (PLTA) managed by Perum Jasa Tirta II in Purwakarta, West Java, a spokesman said.<\/p>\n
\"The cost of the program at the three PLTAs is estimated at US$100 million,\" president director of PT Indonesia Power Tonny Agus Mulyantono said here Friday.<\/p>\n
The project was expected to increase the power plants` combined capacity to 700 GWh from 500 GWh at present.<\/p>\n
Originally, the power plants were designed to have a 900-GWh production capacity but the capacity had declined due to its old equipment (more than 40 years).<\/p>\n
Currently, Indonesia Power had a capacity to produce 9,000 MW of electricity. In 2009-2010, the company would have four new plants with an additional production capacity of 3,200 MW.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, president director of Perum Jasa Tirta II Djendam Gurusinga said the technical cooperation was aimed at increasing his company`s electricity production as a side-product.<\/p>\n
However, he said, the company would continue to focus on efforts to supply drinking water and irrigation.<\/p>\n
\"Eighty percent of drinking water for Jakarta is supplied from here. In total, demand for water per year has reached 7 billion cubic meters, including drinking water and irrigation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Of the total, some 4.2 billion cubic meters were supplied from dams and the rest from rivers.
