        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia\u2019s Foreign Ministry has announced that\nthe 2026 D-8 Summit scheduled for Jakarta has been postponed until\nfurther notice.<\/p>\n<p>At a Foreign Ministry media briefing in Jakarta on Friday, Tri\nTharyat, Director of Multilateral Cooperation, stated that Indonesia\u2019s\nForeign Minister Sugiono has sent letters to D-8 member countries\ninforming them of the postponement of the summit and all its associated\nactivities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegarding the setting of a new date, we will certainly discuss this\nin greater detail in due course. At present, it may not be the right\ntime given the developments that are still ongoing in the Middle East\nregion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tharyat, the decision was made after the Foreign\nMinistry consulted with the D-8 Secretary-General, commissioners,\nambassadors of D-8 member states, and partners in their respective\naccredited countries.<\/p>\n<p>He also stated that D-8 member states provided input regarding the\nsummit\u2019s implementation and understood the difficult circumstances\ncaused by the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia currently holds the D-8 presidency for the 2026-2027 term\nwith the theme \u201cNavigating Global Shifts: Strengthening Equality,\nSolidarity, and Cooperation for Shared Prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this postponement, Indonesia had planned to host the D-8\nSummit on 15 April 2026, to be preceded by a high-level officials\nmeeting and a foreign ministers meeting.<\/p>\n<p>D-8 is an economic cooperation organisation of developing countries\ncomprising Indonesia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria,\nPakistan, and Turkey. Azerbaijan became the newest member state, joining\nin December 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Iran was attacked by the United States and Israel on 28 February,\nwhich killed Iran\u2019s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hundreds of\nfemale students, and other senior Iranian officials. Iran subsequently\nlaunched retaliatory strikes against United States military assets\ndeployed in Middle Eastern countries and effectively closed the Strait\nof Hormuz, resulting in a rise in global oil prices.<\/p>",
