Indonesia offers to host alternative archery meet<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Archery Association (Perpani)
\nproposed a tournament in August to make up for the lack of an
\narchery competition at the 20th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in
\nBandar Seri Begawan in the same month.<\/p>\n
Perpani's secretary-general, Udi Harsono, said the tournament,
\nwhich was expected to be contested by archery federations from
\nSoutheast Asian countries, was proposed after SEA Games host
\nBrunei decided not to include archery in the biennial event due
\nto limited facilities.<\/p>\n
The proposed archery tournament is scheduled to be held in
\nBangkok from Aug. 7 to Aug. 15 and is aimed at strengthening
\nsolidarity among participating archers. It will also serve as a
\nwarm-up for Olympic qualifying tournaments.<\/p>\n
\"Perpani will initiate a diplomatic approach with each
\ncountry's representatives to ask for their support to stage this
\nevent,\" Udi said.<\/p>\n
Udi said archery federations from Southeast Asian countries,
\nincluding Indonesia, had asked Brunei to include archery in the
\nGames.<\/p>\n
He also said the federations offered their support to provide
\nfacilities and human resources if they were not available in
\nBrunei.<\/p>\n
\"Brunei said that it was facing a lack of facilities and human
\nresources and it could only organize certain competitions. For
\nsolidarity among Southeast Asian countries, we respect the host's
\ncapability,\" Udi said.<\/p>\n
The Games, held in Brunei for the first time, will include 20
\nmedal sports. These sports are track and field, badminton,
\nbasketball, billiards and snooker, boxing, cycling, soccer, golf,
\nhockey, karate, pencak silat, sepak takraw, shooting, squash,
\nswimming, table tennis, tae kwon do, tennis, rowing and canoeing,
\nand bowling.<\/p>\n
Perpani has been training its athletes at the Senayan archery
\nrange for Olympic qualifications starting in August. Six of the
\nseven female archers will compete in the World Meet in Riom,
\nFrance from July 22 to July 26 before Olympic qualifications
\nbegin. They will also compete in the Asian Championships in
\nBeijing from Sept. 1 to Sept. 5.<\/p>\n
The six athletes are Nurfitriyana Saiman Lantang, Kusuma
\nWardhani, Hamdiah, Dwi Purwanti, Lusia Elizabeth and Ajeng Wulan.
\nSubstitute Yuliasih will be called up if Dwi fails to show up at
\nthe training complex by Saturday.<\/p>\n
Andi Suhendro, Perpani's deputy of athletes development, said
\nthat the association would wait for Dwi until the last minute
\nbefore calling up Yuliasih. Dwi earlier declined to take part in
\nthe training because of her studies in Surabaya and her
\ndifficulty in obtaining a work permit from the Surabaya
