Indonesia needs more trade lawyers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia needs more legal experts specializing
\nin international trade who can deal with any potential legal
\nproblems in implementing the new General Agreement on Tariffs and
\nTrade (GATT), noted economist Mari Pangestu says.<\/p>\n
\"Few Indonesians understand GATT,\" Mari told journalists when
\nresponding to a question on what the country should do in
\npreparation for the full implementation of GATT.<\/p>\n
The agreement, calling for a comprehensive global trade
\nliberalization, was signed by more than 120 countries and
\ncontributes to 90 percent of the world's trade values.<\/p>\n
According to Mari, the new GATT is turning international trade
\ninto a completely new ball game and this could have legal
\nrepercussions on individual countries, including Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"That's why we need people to especially master the GATT since
\nit has various and complicated subjects,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The United States already has law offices with their own
\nspecial lawyers on GATT affairs. \"While here in Indonesia, their
\nnumber might be very limited, or probably there are no such
\nlawyers,\" Mari said.<\/p>\n
Mari also said that the legal experts on GATT could be used to
\nlobby in international trade transactions.<\/p>\n
They would also play an important role for businesses in the
\ndomestic industry who wish to export their products, she added.
