Indonesia must revise its laws constantly: Try<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia should stick to the 1945 Constitution
\nin facing rapid global change but should also be prepared to
\nreview laws which are no longer applicable, Vice President Try
\nSutrisno said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Opening a major seminar on law at the Merdeka Selatan Palace,
\nTry cited as an example the economy, where, he said, the
\ngovernment had introduced a series of deregulatory measures
\ndesigned to make the country more competitive in the world
\nmarket.<\/p>\n
"This prompts us to draw up new regulations allowing us to
\nliberalize our trade system and privatize certain business
\nsectors," he said.<\/p>\n
Try said Indonesia needed new legislation on business and
\ninvestment in order for the country to remain on course in its
\ndevelopment as it faces growing competition.<\/p>\n
Noting that legal developments should be carried out orderly
\nand in the interests of the general public, Try said the law
\nshould protect and benefit all layers of society, particularly
\nthe less privileged ones.<\/p>\n
The four-day seminar, involving 400 legal experts and
\npractitioners, later proceeded at the Sahid Jaya Hotel. Among the
\nspeakers who addressed the gathering were Minister of Justice
\nOetojo Oesman, Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono and former vice
