Indonesia, India Step Up Telecom Cooperation, Explore 6G<\/p>\n

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and India have agreed to expand\ncooperation in telecommunications technology, including research into\nnext-generation connectivity such as 6G, as both countries seek to\nstrengthen their digital capabilities.<\/p>\n
The cooperation was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding\n(MoU) following discussions on the Joint Leaders\u2019 Statement during\nIndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s state visit to Indonesia, where he\nwas received by President Prabowo Subianto.<\/p>\n
The final cooperation document was exchanged in the presence of the\ntwo countries\u2019 leaders, with Indonesia\u2019s Communication and Digital\nAffairs Minister Meutya Hafid and India\u2019s Communications Minister\nJyotiraditya M. Scindia agreeing to the MoU.<\/p>\n
From 4G and 5G to 6G<\/p>\n
Meutya said the partnership would go beyond improving\ntelecommunications technologies already in use and focus on developing\ntechnologies that could shape future connectivity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are talking about 4G and 5G, but also technologies that will\ndetermine connectivity and digital competitiveness in the future.\nTherefore, research, human resource development, and industry\ncollaboration must be prepared from now,\u201d Meutya said in Jakarta on\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
The cooperation will cover research and development in 4G and 5G\ntechnologies, as well as exploration of 6G, quantum technology and\nadvanced wireless communications.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia wants to ensure that digital transformation enables\nIndonesians to master, develop and create the technologies of the\nfuture. Cooperation with India is one strategic avenue to strengthen\nthat capacity,\u201d Meutya said.<\/p>\n
The agreement is also intended to facilitate knowledge sharing,\nskills development and collaboration between researchers, businesses and\nother stakeholders in the two countries.<\/p>\n
Telecom Networks for Disaster Response<\/p>\n
Beyond next-generation connectivity, the partnership will also focus\non communications systems for disaster response.<\/p>\n
Indonesia and India will explore emergency communication systems and\ndisaster risk reduction solutions designed to keep telecommunications\nservices running during crises and natural disasters.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor Indonesia, connectivity is also about resilience. When disasters\noccur, communication networks must remain a link between communities,\nthe government and emergency services,\u201d Meutya said.<\/p>\n
She said reliable connectivity is becoming increasingly important as\ndemand grows for faster, more dependable and resilient communications\ninfrastructure.<\/p>\n
Training and Industry Partnerships<\/p>\n
The two countries will implement the agreement through programs\nincluding training, upskilling and reskilling to strengthen their\ntelecommunications workforces.<\/p>\n
Research and development partnerships involving universities and\nindustry will also be encouraged, alongside public-private\npartnerships.<\/p>\n
Telecommunications and technology companies in Indonesia and India\nwill have opportunities to pursue joint projects through\nbusiness-to-business partnerships, allowing companies from both\ncountries to combine their respective expertise and capabilities.<\/p>\n
Annual Indonesia-India Telecom Dialogue<\/p>\n
To oversee the partnership, Indonesia and India will establish an\nannual Indonesian-Indian Telco Dialogue.<\/p>\n
The forum will be led by senior officials from both countries and\nheld alternately in Indonesia and India. It will be used to review\nprogress, address challenges and develop follow-up programs.<\/p>\n
The MoU will remain in effect for five years from the date of signing\nand may be extended through a written agreement between the two\nsides.<\/p>\n
