We must master AI\u2014not just at the surface level by using the\nengines,Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital\nAffairs Nezar Patria has affirmed that Indonesia possesses the\nfundamental elements needed to develop advanced digital technologies,\nparticularly artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n
According to Nezar, this foundation consists of robust digital\ninfrastructure and connectivity, a growing pool of digital talent, and\nforward-looking regulatory frameworks designed to balance technological\ninnovation with user security.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a public discussion in West Jakarta on Thursday\n(September 10), the deputy minister highlighted the country\u2019s rapid\ninternet adoption, noting that internet penetration in Indonesia has\nreached 80.6 percent, or approximately 234 million of the country\u2019s 270\nmillion people.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe this is a distinct strength that enables AI to grow,\u201d\nNezar said, adding that 4G LTE coverage currently reaches 97 percent of\nIndonesian territory, enabling widespread access to digital and AI-based\nsolutions.<\/p>\n
However, he emphasized the need to upgrade to high-quality,\nlow-latency infrastructure, such as fiber-optic networks and 5G, to meet\nthe demands of advanced AI processing and rapid decision-making.<\/p>\n
With national 5G coverage currently standing at around 10 percent,\nNezar said the government is actively pushing to expand coverage to 50\npercent within the next two to three years.<\/p>\n
Alongside physical infrastructure, human capital development remains\na core focus for the ministry to ensure Indonesia becomes an active\ncontributor to the global technology economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to educate our younger generation to become developers and\ninnovators in the AI field and secure a place in the global supply chain\nof the international AI industry,\u201d Nezar said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must master AI\u2014not just at the surface level by using the\nengines, but by understanding how the ecosystem evolves,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
To support this expansion, the government is preparing a\ncomprehensive regulatory framework to guide responsible innovation.<\/p>\n
Existing measures include the Electronic Information and Transactions\n(ITE) Law, the Personal Data Protection Law, and an official circular\nletter on AI ethics.<\/p>\n
Work is currently underway on the National AI Roadmap and formal AI\nethical guidelines.<\/p>\n
Nezar assured businesses and innovators that upcoming policies aim to\nnurture rather than restrict the technology sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo not be afraid of the regulations being created. There is no\nintention to stifle development,\u201d Nezar said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is simply to ensure that technological advancement benefits\neveryone, risks are mitigated, and we can reap greater rewards,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n
Economic projections support the administration\u2019s push into the\nsector, with AI adoption estimated to contribute US$366 billion to\nIndonesia\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030.<\/p>\n
