Indonesia, a major international buyer of Prairie wheat, has given Canadian grown crops its official blessing, eliminating the need for costly testing at Indonesian ports.<\/p>\n
The move gives Canada preferred status in a market worth more than $300 million a year to Prairie wheat farmers, and effectively recognizes the superior quality-control systems for grain exported from Canada, according to the Winnipeg-based Canadian Wheat Board.<\/p>\n
Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, who led a trade mission to Indonesia earlier this week, announced the achievement today.<\/p>\n
On average, eight per cent of all wheat exported each year by the wheat board goes to Indonesia, which is typically one of Canada\u2019s top five wheat customers.<\/p>\n
Today, Ritz is in Japan at the first-ever Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) agricultural meeting, looking to expand market opportunities for farmers.<\/p>\n
