Indonesia fails in four-way first jump<\/p>\n

LIDO, West Java (JP): Taking on the more experienced and
\nbetter prepared foreign teams, Indonesia failed to display a
\nformation at the four-way sequential event at the Sixth World
\nParachuting Championships on Canopy Formation yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"We're nervous, it's a non-technical problem,\" Dadang
\nKadarusman, a member of the team, said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, which was represented by the Aves Club from
\nBandung, West Java, only had one month in the United States to
\ntrain for the competition.<\/p>\n
\"We had trouble in changing from diamond, the basic formation,
\ninto vichy formation up there. Unfortunately, the judges did not
\ncount the point for the basic formation,\" Dadang explained.<\/p>\n
\"Other participants, especially from Europe and the United
\nStates, had a better technique to display formations but we are
\nnot capable of using it,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Dadang said that during the overseas stint the team was only
\nable to display five formations. \"We were never be able to form
\nmore than five. I hope we can do better in the next jumps.\"<\/p>\n
The four-way sequential event provides three minutes for each
\nparticipant to display a maximum of 14 formations.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, France displayed 10 formations in its first jump,
\nfollowed by the United States for second place by displaying nine
\nformations.<\/p>\n
Defending champion the United States failed to better its own
\nworld record, which was created in 1994 in Australia by
\ndisplaying 16 formations.<\/p>\n
Canada and Switzerland shared the third position by displaying
\nseven formations and South Africa only produced two formations.<\/p>\n
The canopy formation championships features three events;
\nfour-way canopy rotation, in which five jumps have been
\ncompleted, four-way sequential, in which only one round of jumps
\nhas taken place, and eight-way speed formation, in which three
\nrounds of jumps were completed on Monday.<\/p>\n
The delayed competition, which was scheduled to resume
\nyesterday and is being contested by six countries, again had to
\nbe postponed owing to the hazy weather.<\/p>\n
\"The weather is too hazy and we're not able to see the
\nparachutes on the monitor,\" chief judge Brenda Reid told The
\nJakarta Post.<\/p>\n
After midday, when the conditions appeared clear enough to
\nresume the event, the organizers were forced to abort the
\ncompetition as the wind speed was too strong, exceeding 20 knots.<\/p>\n
Despite such cancellations, however, chairman of the
\norganizing committee Vice Marshall Purnomo Sidhi told the Post
\nthat the championships will be finished as scheduled.<\/p>\n
\"All events will be continued until all participants have a
\nchance to finish eight jumps,\" Purnomo said.<\/p>\n
\"If the weather is perfect, I think we can finish the
\nchampionships in only three days,\" he added.<\/p>",
