Managing used batteries has become a growing priority as Indonesia\naccelerates electric-vehicle adoption and develops downstream industries\nlinked to its vast mineral resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a pressing issue because our focus is not only industrial\ndevelopment, but also how battery waste is managed,\u201d Atong Soekirman\nsaid at the Korea-Indonesia Economic Partnership Forum in Jakarta on\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Atong serves as assistant deputy for metal, machinery, transportation\nequipment, electronics and miscellaneous industries at the Coordinating\nMinistry for Economic Affairs.<\/p>\n
Under Indonesia\u2019s 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan,\nelectric vehicles are a key component of industrial downstreaming and\nefforts to increase the value of domestic natural resources.<\/p>\n
The country\u2019s electric-vehicle market has gained momentum, with sales\nreaching approximately 103,000 units in 2025.<\/p>\n
Lithium iron phosphate batteries dominated Indonesia\u2019s electric-car\nmarket in 2024, accounting for about 96 percent of usage, while\nnickel-manganese batteries represented roughly four percent.<\/p>\n
The rapid growth of electric vehicles is also increasing concerns\nover future volumes of electronic waste and retired batteries.<\/p>\n
Indonesia must strengthen waste-management systems as more\nbattery-powered vehicles reach the market and eventually approach the\nend of their operating lives, Atong said.<\/p>\n
He said effective battery management would help ensure sustainable\nsupplies of critical materials needed by the industry.<\/p>\n
Atong added that successful waste-management policies could help\nIndonesia establish stronger industry benchmarks and provide a model for\nother developing economies.<\/p>\n
Technology adoption from international partners could support those\nefforts through circular-economy practices aimed at recovering valuable\nminerals from used batteries.<\/p>\n
Such efforts also require innovation in product development and\nmanufacturing design to maximize value creation through technological\nadaptation.<\/p>\n

A circular-economy framework is considered essential to ensure\nelectric-vehicle batteries are managed responsibly throughout their\nentire life cycle.<\/p>\n
Similar approaches have already been adopted in several markets,\nincluding Japan, South Korea and Singapore.<\/p>\n
Policymakers believe stronger recycling and waste-management\nframeworks will help support rising global battery demand.<\/p>\n
Worldwide demand for electric-vehicle batteries is projected to\nincrease from about one terawatt-hour in 2024 to roughly three\nterawatt-hours by 2030.<\/p>\n
Battery life spans generally range from eight to 12 years, creating a\ngrowing need for end-of-life collection and recycling systems.<\/p>\n
Indonesia sees stronger regulations, coordinated management and\nexpanded recycling infrastructure as critical to building a sustainable\nbattery industry capable of supporting long-term electric-vehicle\ngrowth.<\/p>\n
