Indonesia embarks on major economic census<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto last night launched a nation-
\nwide economic census, starting today, to encompass all sectors
\nexcept agriculture.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said in a televised speech that the census aimed to
\ncollect complete and accurate economic data which is needed for
\nthe planning, implementation and supervision of development.<\/p>\n
\"It is very important to have statistics about our economic
\nstrength in preparing ourselves for an open global economy and
\nfree trade,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the census will target all legal business
\nentities in Indonesia, including foreign companies. The informal
\nsectors, which include small-scale businesses without licenses,
\nwill also be surveyed, but randomly.<\/p>\n
The President said that the census would also examine small,
\nmiddle and large businesses as well as their sectors and
\nabsorption levels of labor force.<\/p>\n
\"Information about small enterprises is badly needed for
\nnurturing them and reducing our economic gaps,\" Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
He added that the results of the census would also be used to
\nevaluate the level of production efficiency of enterprises and
\ntheir export roles and to map out the possible level of raw
\nmaterials they need.<\/p>\n
The results of the census could also be used for specific
\nbusiness purposes, such as diversifications of businesses,
\nmarketing of products and promotion, Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
The 1996 economic census is the second economic survey to be
\nconducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics to date. The first
\neconomic census was held in 1986.<\/p>\n
The bureau's chairman, Soegito, said earlier this week that
\nhis office would need at least Rp 200 billion (US$87.1 million)
\nin state funds to finance the nation-wide census.<\/p>\n
Soegito said that the government had earmarked Rp 63.4 billion
\nfor data collection in the current state budget, which ends in
\nMarch.<\/p>\n
He said the census would cover mining activities, power
\ngeneration, manufacturing, construction, retailers and
\nwholesalers, among other things. Service activities related to
\ntransportation, finance, accommodation and restaurants will also
\nbe a target of the census.<\/p>\n
Data will be collected in all parts of the country starting
\ntoday until the end of next month in cooperation with provincial
\nadministrations. The outcome of the survey will be published in
\nFebruary 1997.<\/p>\n
Soegito noted that his office would deploy around 86,000
\nsurveyors comprised of workers, teachers and students, to carry
\nout the census.<\/p>\n
Soeharto appealed to businesspeople, including household
\nbusinesses, to support the census and to give correct data to the
\nbureau's surveyors. (rid)<\/p>",
