Indonesia considers assisting Rwandans<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia is exploring the possibility of
\nproviding humanitarian assistance to the civil-war torn Rwanda,
\nPresident Soeharto was quoted as saying yesterday.<\/p>\n
The President discussed all the hardship that the Rwandan
\npeople are facing and would see what Indonesia could do to help
\nthem, visiting Kenyan Vice President George Saitoti told
\njournalists after meeting with Soeharto.<\/p>\n
Saitoti, who is also minister for planning and development,
\nsaid the Rwandan tragedy was discussed during the meeting in
\nwhich he handed a letter from the Kenyan president to Soeharto.<\/p>\n
An estimated half million Rwandans, mostly innocent civilians,
\nhave been killed over the past few months of civil strife
\ninvolving Tutsi and Hutu ethnics. Tens of thousands of refugees
\nare reported to be starving and plagued with cholera.<\/p>\n
Saitoti is here to attend a meeting on population in the Third
\nWorld countries.<\/p>\n
He said the letter from the Kenyan president contained a
\nnumber of suggestions to follow-up on the meeting of the two
\npresidents in 1992 during the Non- Aligned Summit in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, Saitoti met with Minister\/Chairman of the
\nNational Development Planning Board Ginandjar Kartasasmita,
\nduring which the guest requested that Jakarta allow three Kenyan
\nofficials to pursue comparative studies at the board.<\/p>\n
Indonesian State Minister for Population\/Chairman of the
\nFamily Planning Coordinating Agency Haryono Suyono, who
\naccompanied Saitoti, said Kenya wished to buy gas, palm oil and
\nrubber from Indonesia. (pan)<\/p>",
