Coordinating Minister for Economic\nAffairs Airlangga Hartarto conveyed this commitment during a meeting\nwith Chinese President Xi Jinping at the opening of the World Artificial\nIntelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026 in Shanghai on Friday. Airlangga\nexpressed appreciation for China\u2019s initiative in establishing the World\nArtificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) and the trust\ngiven to Indonesia to join as a founding member. He stated that the\ndecision to join WAICO follows a direct directive from President Prabowo\nSubianto to advance the development and utilisation of AI in Indonesia.\n\u201cI convey greetings from President Prabowo Subianto and thank the\nChinese government for initiating WAICO and inviting Indonesia as a\nfounding member. Indonesia is ready to cooperate with WAICO for the\ndevelopment of the global AI ecosystem,\u201d Airlangga said. During the WAIC\n2026 opening, President Xi Jinping emphasised that AI development should\nserve as an instrument to enhance human welfare and promote shared\nprogress among all nations. \u201cAI development should not be a \u2018solo\nperformance\u2019 by one country, but rather a \u2018symphony of global\ncollaboration\u2019,\u201d President Xi stated. To realise this vision, China will\ndevelop an open-source AI platform for collaborative use and development\nby various countries. Over the next five years, China will also organise\ncapacity-building programmes to broaden access to technology and narrow\nthe digital capacity gap. UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres also\nwelcomed the establishment of WAICO, expressing hope that the\norganisation would become a platform for international cooperation to\nadvance AI technology in support of the Sustainable Development Goals\n(SDGs) through inclusive, responsible, and beneficial utilisation.\nAirlangga noted that this commitment aligns with President Prabowo\u2019s\ndirective to use digital transformation and technological mastery as\ntools to improve public welfare, strengthen national competitiveness,\nand achieve national progress. He highlighted that AI can be optimised\nin modern agriculture, renewable energy management, and digital health\nservice innovation, but stressed that its development requires robust\ndigital infrastructure, particularly data centres. Airlangga also stated\nthat Indonesia\u2019s digital economy is currently valued at approximately\n130 billion US dollars and is projected to reach 300 billion US dollars,\nwith AI expected to accelerate this growth.
