        "content": "<p>Indonesia chosen as IMO member<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has been selected to sit as a member<br>\non the London-based International Maritime Organization (IMO).<\/p>\n<p>A statement by the Indonesian Embassy in London said that<br>\nIndonesia was chosen during the 21st conference of the<br>\norganization, held in London from Nov. 15 through Nov. 26.<\/p>\n<p>IMO is the United Nations watchdog for maritime safety and the<br>\nprevention of pollution from ships.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia joined the organization in 1960.<\/p>\n<p>IMO last month called for ships passing through the narrow<br>\nStrait of Malacca to be equipped with an automatic identification<br>\nsystem to prevent accidents.<\/p>\n<p>IMO said ships fitted with transponders could send out<br>\ninformation such as the ship&apos;s name, position, speed and course<br>\nwhen asked under a mandatory reporting system being implemented<br>\nin the strait.<\/p>\n<p>A new mandatory ship reporting system was introduced in the<br>\nStrait of Malacca in December 1998, but its effectiveness depends<br>\nvery much on the compliance by the estimated 30,000 vessels that<br>\nply the busy waterway every year.<\/p>\n<p>The system was implemented by the littoral states Malaysia,<br>\nSingapore and Indonesia.
