Indonesia badly needs qualified coaches: Observer<\/p>\n
CIANJUR, West Java (JP): The absence of qualified coaches for
\nany kind of sports is blamed for Indonesia's unimpressive
\nperformance in international events, a sport observer said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
R. Maladi, the State Minister of Sports in 1956-1962 and 1962-
\n1966, told participants of a symposium on coaching here that
\nIndonesia has trainers, not coaches.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the opening session of the two-day symposium,
\nwhich was attended by 60 coaches and officials of the National
\nSports Council (KONI), Maladi said Indonesian coaches only have
\nthe skills to train athletes on court, but they are not provided
\nwith support.<\/p>\n
"A coach should have a university background, but here coaches
\nare usually only educated to high school level," Maladi said.<\/p>\n
"Coaches who graduate from universities have scientific
\ntraining methods, and can understand the psychological condition
\nof their athletes," he added.<\/p>\n
Maladi suggested the government set up a special Sports
\nInstitute which might become a stable of qualified coaches in the
\nfuture.<\/p>\n
He said although the current Teacher's Training Institute has
\na school of sports and health, it doesn't teach coaches how to
\napproach athletes.<\/p>\n
"A coach should support, understand and encourage his athletes
\nin order to boost their performance."<\/p>\n
"I personally suggest that academies are set up in Bandung and
\nMedan for Western Indonesia, and Surabaya and Ujungpandang for
\nthe eastern part," he added.<\/p>\n
Maladi urged KONI to initiate the idea in cooperation with the
\nMinistry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of
\nEducation and Culture.<\/p>\n
Foreign coach<\/p>\n
Maladi said that, in the meantime, Indonesia should hire
\nforeign coaches, especially for four main sports: swimming, track
\nand field, shooting and gymnastics.<\/p>\n
"The purpose of hiring foreign coaches is to lift Indonesia to
\nnew highs in international events," he said. "The foreign coaches
\nwill also give important lessons to Indonesian trainers," he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Another speaker M. Hindarto, KONI's training director, agreed
\nwith Maladi about hiring foreign coaches.<\/p>\n
"They could transfer their up-to-date knowledge to local
\ntrainers." Hindarto said. "Our trainers will learn how to arrange
\na training program and to build a perfectionist attitude."<\/p>\n
Hindarto, however, reminded that hiring foreign coaches would
\ncost a lot of money. "There will be also a cultural gap between
\nthe coach and the athletes and a language barrier," he said.<\/p>\n
Hindarto said foreign coaches would have only limited time to
\ngroom athletes here. There is also a possibility that the
\nknowledge transfer process would end, once the foreign coaches
