Kupang (ANTARA) \u2014 Indonesia, together with Australia and the\nDemocratic Republic of Timor-Leste (RDTL), has agreed to strengthen the\nmechanism for exchanging intelligence information as a strategic step to\nprevent and tackle various forms of transnational crime that exploit\nborder regions as operational routes.<\/p>\n
Head of Public Relations at East Nusa Tenggara Regional Police (Polda\nNTT), Senior Commissioner Henry Novika Chandra, said in Kupang on\nTuesday that Polda NTT stands ready to follow up on the outcome of the\nmeeting through its territorial commands so that the agreement reached\ncan be realised in measurable operational steps.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Regional Police Chief of East Nusa Tenggara affirmed that\nsynergy between the Indonesian National Police (Polri), the Australian\nFederal Police (AFP) and the Policia Nacional de Timor-Leste (PNTL) must\ncontinue to be strengthened through intensive communication, rapid\ninformation exchange and effective coordination, so that every potential\nthreat of transnational crime can be detected and handled early,\u201d Henry\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The agreement emerged from a Trilateral Meeting between the\nInternational Relations Division (Divhubinter) of Polri, the Australian\nFederal Police (AFP) and the Policia Nacional de Timor-Leste (PNTL),\nheld at Belu Police Headquarters in East Nusa Tenggara.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the three nations expressed hope that the\nagreement would further strengthen the joint response system in\neradicating transnational crime whilst maintaining security stability in\nthe Indonesia\u2013Timor-Leste border region and the routes towards\nAustralia.<\/p>\n
Senior Commissioner Juara Silalahi, an interpreter with the\nInternational Relations Division of Polri, said in a statement received\nin Kupang on Tuesday that transnational crime knows no national borders\nand therefore requires a joint response through closer cooperation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis trilateral meeting is a concrete manifestation of our\ncommitment not to work alone in facing threats that recognise no\nnational borders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Through this forum, he said he hoped a mechanism for intelligence\ninformation exchange that is faster, more accurate and more secure could\nbe established, so that various threats can be prevented at an early\nstage.<\/p>\n
All the outcomes of the discussions, he said, would form part of\nstrengthening cross-border police cooperation, including accelerating\nthe exchange of information on the ground as the primary key to\npreventing transnational crime.<\/p>\n
According to him, the Indonesia\u2013Timor-Leste border region, which lies\nclose to Australia, occupies a strategic position and therefore requires\njoint monitoring of the activities of international criminal\nnetworks.<\/p>\n
Federal Agent Sarah Hammond of AFP Dili said Indonesia, Timor-Leste\nand Australia face interconnected security challenges owing to the\ngeographical proximity of the three countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe see criminal networks still exploiting sea and land routes in\nthis region as transit routes. These threats cannot be handled by a\nsingle country alone, which is why information exchange and trilateral\ncooperation are so important,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The AFP, she said, is committed to strengthening collaboration with\nPolri and the PNTL in handling people smuggling, human trafficking,\nnarcotics circulation and the smuggling of illegal chemicals.<\/p>\n
Echoing this, Chief Superintendent Calisto Gonzaga of the PNTL Border\nPolice Unit said that strengthening intelligence information exchange\nmust be accompanied by an increase in joint patrols, combined operations\nand personnel capacity building in order to narrow the room for\nmanoeuvre of cross-border criminals.<\/p>\n
